Hey all,

so I'm almost finished redesigning my new wordpress website. It is located at v2.mydomainname.com and my old website is located on my real domain name (wordpress too)

My question is how would I migrate my new website from the subdomain to the domain? This is going to be my first time transferring a website and I want to make sure everything is done right.

Thanks.

Isn't there a backup component available for this?

I always use BackupBuddy to migrate. Works like a charm.

BackupBuddy : PluginBuddy | WordPress Plugins

    Cheers,

I'll look into it, but I want to make sure I get every step covered, you know.

And no, I won't pay anything... Because I believe this can be done easily without spending a penny as my sites aren't that big enough.

Check out the tutorial on this at WordPress.org. You will have to do all the transfer work yourself. That's the only way you can have it done without paying anything. Even plugins for this cost money.

Hello, i try to migrate wordpress to another server and and i figure that is not so easy. After changing configuration to database i figure that i must change every url link of posts in every table which contains url. That is big disadvantage of this php application. Can anybody have another opinion ???

    Thanks.

Let me put this correctly for you: this is the big disadvantage of ignorance

If you mean you manually changed URL in every possible table/row in the MySQL database - that's crazy.

I have moved WP sites for many years from all the possible servers and configurations. Never had to manually edit URLs in the database - except the site_url and home lines!

For everything else (like reference to uploads, internal links with full URL etc.) youhave 2 options:

    a) learn how to do a query in the database via phpMyadmin to change whatever you need to change (or ask for help in the Programming subforum)

    b) say thank you to the nice people who created the free "Search and Replace" plugin

    Hi there,

I am also considering to do the same thing: Migrating my website into my own domain from a free sub-domain. I am considering to copy each article and post it as a blog post and categorize it later using menus.

If you have better idea by now then please share it with me. I'm hoping to do it quite soon.

Yes, I do have better ideas... however, you will need to give more technical details.

What is the source that you are migrating from? i.e. where your blog is presently? Done with what software?

Do you plan to migrate it to your own domain into a WP blog?

Okay so what I'm going to do is:

    1) First backup all my old files and database
    2) Delete all the files on my main domain
    3) Change the wordpress and site url in my wp-admin of my subdomain
    4) Transfer all the files from my subdomain to the domain

Since I'll also be transferring the wp-config.php and my new database is on the same server, I won't need to do anything with the database, right?

Note: I haven't done SEO yet, so there is no need to worry there.

    Theoretically, it should work.

After #3 you will get a big error message... if it doesn't scare you, everything will be fine

Well I didn't get any big error message. Only thing that happened is when I went on my subdomain's site, there was no stylesheet and everything was messed up, but no error message.

So do you think after the transfer of all the files everything will be fine? Or just theoretically fine?
If not, what more should I do?

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice.
    In practice there is...

You should be fine. And if there is any trouble, just post and we'll help.
