My WP 3.3 update experience so far

Hi guys,

thought I'd share what I've experienced so far when updating to the latest WP version.

- most sites: no problem
- one site: two plugins stopped working.
- one site: theme got completely messed up;
- one site (big one, unfortunately): After update, frontend runs without issues, but can't acces admin area (WSOD "white screen of death").

For me, this has been one of the more problematic updates so far.

I love the new features (drag & drop uploader), but for critical sites, I wouldn't recommend updating as of now.

I'll stay away from updating other sites until the next minor release at least.

    Instead of tying it to the "next minor release" and making this sound like a WordPress problem, why don't you just say that you're not going to do more upgrades until your plugins and themes are updated to WP standards so that they work when the core is updated?

    I recommend updating immediately, and dealing with any problems that arise. You may have to toss out-of-date themes or plugins, but then you ought to be doing that anyway.

      Funny cause my biggest sites are the ones that I want to update sooner Why risk my best websites?

      If a plugin gets outdated I can give them a couple days to fix it. otherwise, sayonara. Same thing for themes (although I use my own 90% of the time).

        valid point. Indeed, my post sounds like the problem is caused by WP, which obviously it's not. It's really just the first update in a long time that caused problems, so I wanted to share this experience.

        I would agree that updating right now and then looking for problems is, technically and security-wise, the better option. In my scenario, this is problematic; I usually do minor plugin updates automatically via manageWP and test some sites I have a closer grip on for WP update behaviour before updating all pages.

        The problem with the "update now approch" is - for whatever reason, this update caused more conflicts than most in the past; updating all pages right now and looking for solutions then would mean a lot of messed up client sites, a lot of efforts from my side and a lot of manpower from the guys I work with to fix them, that's mainly why I, personally, will stay away for the moment.

        Two-sided sword for me.... With a few exceptions for pages I play around with, I usually only use stuff that's needed, so it's a choice between having a page messed up by a potentila security hole or by an update. The 2nd one is more likely to happen... plus, throwing out some plugins would mean finding workarounds to the needed solution, which can be time-consuming and a pita....

        BTW, all problems were indeed caused by plugins and have been fixed where possible by either adapting the plugin or throwing it out, as suggested...

          Rob,

          I've had a very similar experience. Wonder why it is always our biggest websites that have the biggest challenges with an upgrade . . .LOL. I know the more I've customized a theme, the more likely it seems to fail to upgrade.

          I'm in agreement with this discussion that you do need to just suck it up and make the changes as each upgrade comes along. I had one site I had NOT updated and it eventually had to start from scratch.

          I did find using the backupcreator.com plugin very helpful. Gave me warm and fuzzies to know everything could be replaced if it failed
