HTML Knowledge Question Please

Hi fellow Warriors:

Hope the weekend is going well. Could you be kind enough to give me some background on the need to know "HTML" for websites and blogs?

These days numerous hosts from a few dollars a month to the more expensive packages enable you to set up the website as if you are typing the words in a forum. You can cut, paste, bold, enlarge, change color, quickly create new pages, etc. Uploading audio, photos, and video has been made easier as well.

Let's say in a few months I need a website for a new package or a family member is interested in starting on the internet, what is the advantage of either gaining knowledge of HTML or having somebody design the site that has expertise with it?

Aren't the keys (no order) search engine optimization, content, price, look, customer service, time devoted to traffic?

Thank you for your time and I hope for the knowledgeable folks out there it was not a stupid question.

Guess it really depends on how much money you have, to pay web designers every time you need them. I think every one working on the net should know at least the basics, for reasons you already mentioned. Plus many web editors are point and click.

What if you need something done on a web site quickly and your web person is not around? Or customers counting on you, but they have to wait till you get some one to fix it for you? Just some things to think about.

For me html basics should be a must.

Thanks for reply. I am still confused because even with little website knowledge I can update a site, add, photos, video, text, audio, links, make new pages.

How does not knowing HTML codes hurt me?

Like I said, I think the "basics" should be known, like the simple tasks you mentioned.

My thoughts are, if you need something fixed or some html work done quickly and you've had a web person do all the work for you, that you can't get a hold of, you might run into trouble. That's all I was saying.

There are probably plenty of people that have gotten by with no html knowledge, but it's kind of risky to me. I personal don't want to rely on any one else to keep my web site working or up and running. Hosting being the exception. Guess it doesn't hurt you until something is broke and you can't fix it

I think its always good to know the basic, you should at least know how to put up a page up, how to set up a wordpress blog or create posts and pages. But when it comes to html, it is a bit risky to make your hands dirty if you don't know what you are doing. With all browser compatibility issues coming up now, you may land into trouble.

Again, it all depends on what "basic" means for you, adding pictures, tables etc can be tricky. Might look good on one browser and bad on 4 others.

But yes, the most important things are getting content, traffic and strategy to convert your visitors, it is easier to use wp than go and learn html.

Here is an example made up obviously since I am not plugging anything here.

Even though I don't know what this would mean or what it would do I can perform various tasks in a setting to me is word processing.

It is interesting that I can create a functional website and blog, write two books in the proper format but even with a radio background only found in the old days 3 VCR's out of 1000's I could set and program.

Simplicity is good for an old person like me!

Learn the basics of HTML and do it using a texteditor (Notepad) then move up to CSS.
The thing is to start, just design a simple page get an HTML book and go for it. Then build up your knowledge and experience.

Thanks for the nice words and quick reply. I am still confused on one topic and apologize to the group and yourself if I am using wrong terminology. When I think of somebody that knows HTML it would be the fake example below

becoming "Come over To Blah Blah For The Grand Opening." I can't do that but as mentioned previously can create pages, update, upload anything, write text, etc. What would becoming an HTML expert due that the average person can not on their blog and or website.

Since the websites I have worked with operate in the Word Processor/Microsoft Word realm nothing I wanted to do seemed out of reach. However the simple fact people have 1000 page manuals on HTML there must be a reason Sue wants to know it all and John can't stop reading tech books, but most are content to do what I have.

Hello Craig,
This would be my suggestion. Keep doing what you are comfortable with, the typing and styling of text and writing your thoughts in a word processor like Microsoft Word. When you are ready for a website, you would be well served with a content management system (probably Wordpress, but there are others) because once it is installed all you really need to do is use the dashboard to create new posts or new pages. Those posts and pages need content, and you already know exactly how to do that. The editor inside the dashboard has all of those controls you talked about for bold and italics, etc. And the beauty of a content management system is that you don't need to know programming for PHP or HTML or CSS or anything else.

Sure it would help, but that's why you would pay a webmaster to complete technical tasks. Your job would be to keep adding and creating more content. It can be as simple as copy and paste. I don't see anything wrong with that.

Thank you for the kind words and advice. It seems that with the little knowledge people have as to why if they put a key in the car it goes or how come if you hit a link option you can insert it, we still can accomplish a lot by following directions and logic.

If only I had knowledge in SEO for the news site that is a possibility in spring 2009. That would be a different story!
