How Do I Create Webpages From Scratch

I have purchased a Domain from Go Daddy and Hosting through Host Gator. I've figured out how to do everything up to creating webpage, that's where I get stuck.

I've already downloaded Filezilla and know that to make my site public I will need to make an index.html doc, but how do I edit it?

When I move index.html into public.directory or the one that is viewed by others, it shows scrambled words on a blank white page. When I delete index.html, my page navigates to the Host Gator control panel screen.

I understand html code with <div> <p> <h1> and etc. Also <head><title><body>, but how do I implement these within the index.html.

Any help would be highly appreciated.

    If u don't know how to do a full website with HTML, my advice is to drop it and build a site on wordpress, it's the best platform for begginers. it's much easeir and Dynamic and you can find a lot of guides for this (i can direct u to a few, if u want)

    I commend you for trying to learn html.

    You could take the easy option and install wordpress, but having an understanding how things work is a valuable skill to have.

    Take a look through this, W3Schools is a good place to start learning:

    Good luck.

      I've started using a Free Site Builder that comes with Host Gator. I spent about 2 hours yesterday updating the site, but now I can't download the page. I am not sure how to find the
      site I built on my computer, then move it over from computer to the server through Filezilla. Is this even possible with the site builder sites? Please direct me to a few platforms for beginners.

      Thanks, I intend to develop my HTML skills more. It's a must, since a buddy of mine wants me to do a site for him also. So I'm using my website as my crash course.

        Has i was saying, i not recommending u to start with html, even if the platforms are looking easy to handle. I started with joomla and wordpress, this are the 2 best platform for start (also druple, very similer to joomla). it will give u the same effect with much less work to do...
        U can find many guides and i can direct u to the good ones if u want. Also, Yahoo have a nice sitebuilder, i didn't try him myself but i heard is very comfortable. Most od the free site builders make u work hard to export them to a server. every site builder export the sites in different way, so i need to know what platform u are using, maybe i can help.

        In general i'm not recommending to use those free platform, because every platform demand a few hours/days of studies, and u don't want to waste your time. focus on the most common platform and it will be more easy in the future.

    I think, php would be more useful, I mean, who writes his sites in pure HTML nowadays?

    Best way to learn is to work with source codes and learn the structure. Soon enough, you will figure out that it's not that difficult. To be a successful marketer, you don't have to start pulling HTML tags out of your sleeve, when someone stops you on a street and asks you, how would you enable this or that feature in HTML / php.

    If you want to download your site, first of all, you need to pack it / compress into an archive (.rar / .zip) via their file manager and then download it in 1 file - the archive.

    Frankly, I'm not sure, if their built-in site builder is for any good, I always find these services rather obsolete and always missing the proper functions I need.

    But hey, good luck with your new site, it's just wonderful that here on WF, you can always ask other people for help, in this case, I'd go for a support ticket with HostGator, they're pretty fast with answering those.

    Regards,
    George

      If you're going to use PHP to output HTML, it would help to know HTML.

      I agree with you. It is important to know the basics. People want to jump in and start using Wordpress, and I think people can do that, but they will benefit greatly if they are learning HTML.

      I've noticed a lot of questions by people here on the forums, they think they have what they think is a complicated Wordpress question, but it turns out it's just a simple HTML or CSS question. Without a basic knowledge of HTML or CSS people don't even know the right questions to ask or where to ask when they have a little problem.

    Most softwares typically store files in their program folder. I usually like to keep websites in another folder on my machine that's easier to get to than the program folder on my "C" drive or somewhere in "My Documents". When you create a website with your software, pay attention to where it puts the files. Most of these softwares create a folder for the website when you create a new website. In your case because you are trying to create a page for an existing site all you really need to do is know where the page is stored so you can upload to your server. You can use filezilla if you like, most of the time I use the file manager in Hostgators cpannel to upload files. Another tip: most server softwares have a default document type set. in the case of Hostgator it should be either "index.html" or even "index.htm" and typically a secondary document type which is going to be "index.php" this default document should be defined in .htaccess. You can Google information on how to set this.

    Definitely try Wordpress. You can have a great looking site setup quickly, but also be able to maintain and expand with little to no hassle.

    Here is another vote for WordPress! It can be much more SEO-friendly and is easy to edit and update. Plus, the growing number of plugins and great themes makes it hard to beat the price of FREE.

    As it has already been stated, I would give WordPress a shot. It is very easy to setup and customize. With the thousands of free themes and plugins, you don't have to know any html. However, I do recommend to start learning html, css and basic php. Some knowledge of these will give you the power to make things happen on your site.

      I'm not sure which site builder it's called but it's the free one through Host Gator. At least I think it's free.

      I've acctually been setting up my pages with HTML, but it is the very Basic. At this point I've reviewed and remembered how to save notepad under all files, and to my desktop. Then I drag and drop into a browser and can edit from notepad. I've set up just a page with my title and listed my services within the body. Even created a line with <hr/> going across, and put in a table which redirects folks to my blog site. However, I need to figure out how to manage the directories. When I check my site it's still says parent directory and has home as a directory as a link. When I click home it takes me to my notepad edit page I'm working with. How can I get it so when I put my site.com that it brings up my home page and not the weird parent directory. I would have to go to my site.com/home.html to view over my page. Anybody feel free to answer.

      Having used html to create a website in the past and also Wordpress, I would be another person voting for Wordpress, for its simplicity.

      I can appreciate your desire to learn more about html coding and implementing it. if you are determined to follow the html route I would suggest the following:

      If you are like me, as a visual learner I like to watch, take notes and practice; if this is you too try YouTube.com, which has loads of great videos, which you can pause and copy on your computer. Hope this helps.

      Good luck on the website.

      Cheers

        I have never seen a browser scramble your content before, but my guess would be that you have your tags out of order. This is the typical structure for a html page.

        <head>
        <meta tags>
        <styles>
        </head>
        <body>
        <h1>
        <p>
        </p>
        </h1>
        </body>

        obviously you can have other tags in the body section and head, but you have to do your research for your individual cases.

        hope this helps!

        J.D.
