site structure how deep is to deep

As my site gets bigger and I read more about site structure I am having trouble figuring out how to add more pages to my site without it becoming buried too deep in the site structure.

So here is my question. On my home page I have seven buttons on my menu bar, one that I am wanting to do more with has drop down pages under it with many pages showing. One of the pages in the drop down is almost like a main page with articles on the 20 different regions of Italy. So would it be too deep if on each regional page also had related articles on it to click on to read.

The regional page is an over view of what you can do in that region so I don't really want to say a lot about many of the cities in that region but thought I could put a related articles box with articles of some of the cities in that region. The problem I see is from reading more about site structure and many saying try and follow the two click rule of finding information.

So if someone is on my home page they would have to hover over the button I am talking about and click on one of the pages listed which would be the main region page that is one click. On the main regional page is 20 separate pages for all the regions in Italy so clicking on one of them to read about that region would be the second click.

While reading an overview of the region maybe the person would be interested in what is going on in a number of towns. Could i put a related article box there with info about specific cities without the site structure being too deep because that would be the 3rd click. What do you think is that too deep. Ps, sorry for this long questions but I don't know how else to as without all the info. Thanks Mark

page depth is based on the url, not the directory and not on the click. That said you can use mod rewites like a wordpress site to move all page to a root location, well, make google think they are at a root location.

Depth only matters for seo. The farther from root a file is the less important it is. So Google gives it less weight.

    mysite.com/folder/folder/mypage.html

    is less important then

    mysite.com/mypage.html.

store the files in you server the way you want then use mode rewrites to make
the urls look nice. 3 levels of navigation means nothing if your pages appear to be in root.

Design your navigation to be user friendly, google knows nothing about how many clicks it takes to get there.

One or two levels is usually efficient. Make sure it's well categorized, and that pages within only link to other pages of same topic. The deeper you go the more confusing it can be for user's to type in urls or cause typos. Generally deeper structures can take more clicks to get to content.

    I suggest max 3 deep. Category>Sub-Category>Single Page.
