Membersite setup questions

I'm in the process of planning out a membership site and am having some frustrations. I want everything to revolve around a message board. There's two possible formats that I'm looking at.

The first is vbulletin or at least a board with a good CMS.

The second possibility involves setting up some kind of login portal to get access to a members area with the forum and whatever accompanying pages. I want the sign in to the general members area and forum to be simultaneous.

Either way I do it want to set up an affiliate program. At first I wanted to use clickbank but now I'm thinking it might be better in the long run to set up my own system. What are some good companies that I could get to help manage the billing and payouts for me? Or should I just use clickbank?

Also, from what I've read doing this with vbulletin (at least with cb) would be a major hassle. So what forums might be good for the portal + membership area set up?

I'd rather figure out these technical aspects now so that I can focus entirely on content, etc. later.

    I'm no expert in the field but i have run into similar frustrations before.

    The best that I could come up with was to manually setup a main database of user information and then upon registration create a hook/handler that will automatically register their vbulletin and/or affiliate account. This way you have one place where all the info is.

    Although I've seen websites where you register account (for download or purchase or affiliate program) and then IF YOU WANT to participate in the forums you register a different, completely separate one. I personally don't like that but at the same time I understand that not everyone want to be a forum member.

    When it come to affiliate systems your best bet is to go with your own if you are planning to run it long term.

    Why would you not just use wordpress?
    It is not hard to code a members area?
