How to Create a Page Outside WP

Hi Guys

I have a large static site with existing pages well ranked and the site also has a Wordpress blog. What I want to do is import those static pages into Wordpress BUT I want to keep the same URLS so pages like ...

www.mydomain.com/subdir/example.html

... become WP pages but retain their existing URLS.

My WP installation in the 'blog' subdirectory. So when I try to create a new page within WP, it want's to give me a URL beginning ...

www.mydomain.com/blog

Can anyone see a way I can accomplish this?

    It looks like there are a number of plugins that might help me to do this. Does anyone have any direct experience with using one of these?

    There might be plugins (I don't know about them) but before going there: what is in your root dir?
