Microblogging software or theme?

I'm considering starting a microblogging site as a small side project. I'm looking for something simple where there would be no themes or settings-aside from maybe privacy, etc-for users to mess with. Just log in, type up a couple of lines or a few paragraphs, and post it for the world to see.

It could possibly be something like 43things but with more specific topics.

Any suggestions or ideas?

So you're looking for a social network site? Where people can create accounts, and post it on their "wall"? Except you want to keep everything to a minimum?

Well all I know is Buddypress which is a social network plugin for wordpress. I'm guessing that has too many features.

I guess it could be a social network of sorts. I don't use them-I don't even have a facebook account-so certain terms have little meaning to me.

Think the big question would be, what reason would some one have to use your site? Not giving you a hard time, just that there are so many social/mirco blogging sites out there already, what would make your's better?
