Need some Wordpress plugin related advice

Hello.
This is my first post here so I hope I am posting in the right are. I have read DOs and DONTs so hopefully I am not breaking any rules by asking this.

For my upcoming website I will be needing couple of plugins or customization of Wordpress that I have never used before.
The site will be centered around user feedback via comments. I need:
1. A comment section where users can add comment but I need them to be sort of authorized (posts will consist of some sort of trivia questions) - the best would be if they could sign up via facebook and some other social network ID but also via username and email. Is this possible?
2. I need sidebar widget where I can place some of the commentators - that means also those who signed up via FB or other service.

Is Wordpress capable of this? Thank you.

  • Yes - Wordpress is capable of this. It sounds like you want more of an interactive style, social site. Have you considered Buddy Press? All you've asked is taken care of by this plugin and it is most easy to set-up.

Just a word of warning - Install the Askimet Plugin and be ready to install the 'Delete Comments' plugin also - WP sites open for comments are fertile breeding grounds for thousands of mis-guided, backlink seekers who will drop SPAM comments on your site. Just an FYI - I have a FREE 44 video tutorial series on WP Set-up if you need it. Click the link(s) in my signature.

Yes the site will be interactive. The only thing is I am not really a programmer but I do have experience with Wordpress and it just seems like the easiest solution.

So Buddy Press plugin actually allows me to show commentators that I select in a widget? Even if they signed up using FB,G+ or some external service?

I will definitely install Akismet or some CAPTCHA plugin. However I carry my iPhone most of the time so I think I could service the site when I'm on the go.

Or is there some better way than Wordpress? I don't really want a site that requires some kind of registration as this will be more of a "fun" site than something of serious information value. Registrations, even those that are not complicated would probably drive my visitors away so I want to keep it as simple as possible.

So I installed Buddy Press. It looks really good and has almost everything I need to run the site. Except I can't figure out how to display member widget the way I want it to.

I will have two groups - I need to display them in two widgets, perfect format would be their avatars and names and I also need to manually adjust their order.

    How can I do this.

You can always alter your CSS to display widgets and other areas of your sites theme the way you want. But it does require some knowledge of CSS. You can always find detailed breakdowns of this online, then always backup what you are editing by copy and paste I in a new txt file.

Then start altering the padding and margin px sizes to shift around widget areas. Trial and error will always teach you how things work.

Thank you Jesse. Actually I managed to tweak my theme almost the way I want it to be but I've been looking in CSS lately a bit. I managed to solve few formatting problems using CSS and in the end it doesn't look as complicated, at least not for the basic stuff like font formatting etc.
