Creating AI files without Adobe Illustrator

I am looking at doing some freelance work for graphic design and a lot of people require ai files or eps. I only have Photshop CS2. Can I design in CS2 then create these other file types from that file?

Thanks in Advance

Hi Peter - I use CS3 - but I imagine CS2 is the same. What you'll need to do is Export -> Paths to Illustrator. That will export a .ai file.

That said, I'm not sure if you need to have illustrator installed for that option to work - I do have illustrator - but give it a shot.

    No, you can't.

The 'ai' file type is native to Adobe Illustrator; 'eps' is a PostScript file that contains a set of Postscript commands. Pixel-based files cannot be translated into vector commands, they're like apples and oranges.

People want .ai and .eps files so they can be resized to the necessary dimensions without loss of quality.

Sorry, but it sounds as if you probably need to learn a little bit about 'graphic design' before you go collecting money from people and delivering a sub-standard product.

I agree with Steve, offering a service is a serious commitment. If you make a claim, you better hope you can back it up with your skills or else clients will F*** you up!
