I rank several local businesses web sites and I was just hired to rank a wedding photographer's web site and I am faced with an issue that I'm not sure how to handle.

The site is hosted through PhotoBiz .com and they provide the hosting and basically rent you a theme that is not based off of WordPress. If you leave them you cannot take the theme with you.

Here's the problem:

This photographer's site has approx. 135 pages indexed in Google. 134 of those pages have the pageID after the domain like this:

www.myclientssite.com/?pageID=952232
www.myclientssite.com/?pageID=470503

Photo Biz told me that there is no way to remove or change the ?pageID=952232 of the 134 pages, so basically my client is stuck. Also this company doesn't give access to the server files or the HTML of each page.

Has anyone tried to rank pages with the /?pageID=952232 with any success? I might have to tell my client that there is nothing I can do unless they go to a web hosting company and move there site and start over.

Any suggestions or feedback will be appreciated.
Thanks

I would highly recommend you get your clients off of that host. You can't expect to rank well with permalinks like that. The keywords in the url are too important for SEO. Get them to hire you to build their site on Wordpress and you can use reseller hosting or HostGator affiliate program for extra cash!

      Thanks for the info gpb,

I have been doing a lot of searching online about this issue and am getting so much mixed opinions. The problem with doing 301 redirects with the 134 URL's will be a nightmare. I couldn't do 301 redirects anyway because the company doesn't give access to the pages code or access to the server.

I do agree with you that this company that has you kind of trapped is not good. If I get their site ranked well and the company goes out of business or my client decides to move to a hosting company, they will have to start from scratch again.

Your best bet is to move to another host. Unfortunately, you may have to start over. Would you mind pm'ing me the link so I can can take a look at the site itself?

I agree with you but the client isn't that willing to move since they stated to me the time and work they put into the current site. It amazes me that people hire SEO's and then don't want to listen to what they have to say.

I'm not sure what you mean?

My client is paying a company that provides hosting and photography templates / themes that they can have access too for a monthly fee. The monthly fee includes hosting and the ability to make a photography web site through a web based admin panel.

This company doesn't use WordPress but their own platform. The BIG problem with this setup is that the company blocks all access to the server and blocks all access to the code to the individual pages to the website.

Also if my client decides so leave and go to another hosting company, they will not be able to take the their website files to another host. So essentially this company has their clients trapped there.

Another BIG problem is that when you make a new page, the company has their platform setup by default to make the permalink look like this: ?pageID=4583 and there is no way to change the permalink structure.

They have been with this company for months and don't want to change. I did a rank check on all their pages against 33 keywords that receive traffic according to Google and their homepage is the only page that shows in the SERP's and I attribute that to the other pages permalink structure is all screwed up and causing the pages not to get ranked at all.
