Removing /blog/ from Wordpress Permalinks?

I'm using a multisite wordpress installation, I added a new site/mapped domain and everything has been working fine . However, after changing the theme on the main site (I don't know whether this affects anything) and converting some pages to posts via a plugin, the newly converted posts now show /blog/ in the permalinks which obviously I don't want.

The secondary site is fine - still showing the custom permanlinks without /blog/. I have gone into the main network admin site settings and removed the /blog/ leaving just /%postname%/ as with the secondary site but as soon as I do this I get a 404 for every post on the main site, so at the moment it's a 404 or /blog/ in the urls - can anyone help me remedy this issue, I have been searching but can't seem to find a solution I'm thinking maybe I should trash the pages and redo them as posts and see if that will work as they're all fairly new and without PR and I could redirect the old page url to the new post url if it worked?

If you can't, go to phpmyadmin >> Choose your database --> choose table "Wp-option" >> find the url and click edit to change.

If you did this, your site still got error, contact your webhosting, maybe the hosting does not support .htaccess
      Yep.

You might also want to check the permalink settings as well.

Not sure. An image of your error or a more detailed explanation might help though.

Thanks for the prompt relies! It seems to be working now (though I didn't do anything different from before!) - just resaved the permalink settings without the /blog/ again before your replies came in. At first it would quickly show /blog/ just before the page loaded, now it just goes straight to /postname right away with no /blog/ displaying. I'll keep my eye on it but hopefully it should be gone for good now with no more errors...

When you change the links, you often need to update your permalinks preference to have the change registered.

You might also want to consider reinstalling. Sometimes when you install a blog, your web hosting automatically installs it to mysite.com/blog and you don't realize it.

Reinstalling and removing the /blog is a quick way to fix it.
