Proper 301 Re-Direct - Who handles this?

Hello,

I have decided to move away from my current web designer and host and go with Word Press and a completely new web host.

I am going to use a new brand specific domain name (my company name) instead of my current keyword domain. I want to work on brand recognition and move away from any customer disconnect with my brand.

I know I need to do some 301 re-directs but does my new web host or old web host handle this (or both)? Also, I wanted to remove all of my domains from my old web host and transfer to the new host. If we perform the transfer, will my 'new' host be able to then handle the 301 re-directs?

I am confused to no end about this.

Thanks for any help!,

Dave

There are a few ways of handling this.

Firstly, a 301 redirect is done from your old domain to the new domain.

You can either leave your old website where it is and set up the 301 redirects on your old web hosting server, or you can transfer your old domain to your new host and set up the 301 redirects there (which is probably better in the long term for managing things).

      Hello,

      Thanks for the input....

Will I be able to 'move' the domain to the new company even without moving the website and it's contents? I'm a little unclear as to this whole process....

      Many thanks,

      Dave

        Yes, you will.

Say you used to have hosting with company A.
And you have example1.com; example2.com as domains.

Now you are buying example3.com and example4.com.
        And hosting from company B.

At your registrar you set the DNS info for example1 and example.2 to point to company B host server.

Now you have all the domains hosted on company B.
In example1.com and example2.com root you set up .htaccess file to do whatever redirect is necessary.

You can redirect your old site and old sites URL to new one by adding redirection code in .htaccess file of old domain.
