Is this possible with WordPress?

I want to create a website similar to Yelp in the sense that it is mainly user generated content, where users choose a specific product and have the ability to review it for others to read. My niche has literally thousands of products that can be reviewed. Is this possible with wordpress? Or do I need to hire a programmer for something on a larger scale?

    Yes it is possible, but you will need to be more specific to what you actually want. For example you could easily make posts for each product and users could review them via WordPress comments. Without a customized theme, this isn't going to look very good though.

      I want to create a membership requirement to be able to review products with the hopes of creating a certain level of personalization. And the website needs to look good. I want a clean, simple look. I am definitely not a WordPress pro... do you think this is a project that is better off being outsourced to someone with more experience?

    I agree with @r3p - it can be done. The most simplest and basic way is to require Wordpress registration for your 'membership'; and there are ratings plugins out there you could use to offer a rating system (i.e. GD Star Rating or Five Star Rating). As for the theme, you could try a theme with a custom home page layout that uses widgets to display content (i.e. Genesis framework is one example). If you have some Wordpress knowledge you could set this up yourself. Outsourcing, of course, is also another way to get the job done.
