Choosing web design firm is not easier as it seems especially when you have big requirement which needs expert to handle and execute to get your design tasks delivered in desire time line. Selecting any web design firm just by having a look at their portfolio is not wise option and you must do little research and review. you need to ask some tricky question like what extra things they do before integrating flash in to design so it doesn't make any obstacle with point of SEO. what tools they have been using to test and improve website speed? Question about the software and method of website design and all other things which creates your image as knowledgeable client. If possible gather the list of all these question that comes into your mind and ask to all web design firm from which you have got free quote and select the one with proves itself able to give efficient and genuine answers...

    If I had given you a quote because you asked me for one, after you had seen my portfolio and read the testimonials from my many already very happy customers who refer us because of our customer service, site design, attention to detail, listening to their needs, etc.. shall I go on? and then you came back with a list of questions like that, I am afraid I might see you as a future "problomatic client" and would most likely decline the job.

    Answering those kind of questions, some of them, is like trying to answer how long a piece of string is... each client is different and each clients website is therefore going to be different as are their needs, through the process of consulting with a potential client those kinds of things would hopefully, get covered.

    However, I do get (I think) what you are saying and yes, due diligence should be undertaken.

    I disagree, a portfolio gives a good indication on ability of a given designer or design team. That said, I agree - clients need to have excellent specifications or the work done won't meet their needs.

    Ask if they use templates. Nothing wrong with using a template, but if they do use templates the prices should be substantially less than for custom designed sites.

    If you look at the source code in their portfolio sites you can usually see if templates are being used (hint: look at the directory that the css files are being called from)
