Hi RosieBrown, I used WooCommerce on my family shop website, and the results are pretty good.
Also Magento is a good solution, but installation can get you in trouble.

So I suggest you to install Wordpress, and put on WooCommerce with anyone of its available themes.
If you want a real example, send me a PM and I will show the website.

See you soon,

Re: Which is the best Ecommerce platform?

Hi @rosiebrown0,

I don't like a one-size fits all approach - I've built ecommerce sites with Magento, OpenCart, OSCommerce and WordPress and what I would say is this: Magento is a big beast - sometimes overkill (and slower than it ought to be) for simple sites, but it is the most robust, scales extremely well and is owned by ebay; OpenCart is great for ecommerce sites that are not too complex - and my clients find it a breeze to use also. My last WordPress e-commerce website (for a photographer) used the WP e-commerce plugin and got hacked due to a vulnerability in another wordpress plugin, but the site did function well, it was user-friendly - and my client loved it. The WOOCommerce plugin and themes are great too.

In choosing a solution, I would say, think about what the site has to do, is it relatively simple or complex? Who is going to be using/updating the product info - you or the client? And then depending on who will be using it on a day-to-day basis, decide what would be best for either yourself or your client from both a functional perspective (it gets the job done and serves it's purpose) and also from an ease-of-use perspective. Sometimes I think about the technical ability of my client and go for what would be friendliest for them to use.

Hope that helps.

Re: Which is the best Ecommerce platform?

WordPress isn't designed for e-commerce and you'll never have all of the functionality you may need that you get in a true e-commerce script like Magento.

As a previous poster stated, Magento is a resource hog and bloated. Stay far away from OScommerce and that leaves me with my favorite...Interspire. Very expensive but very user intuitive and more features than you'll probably ever need or want.

My choices when building for clients:

Large shop with a lot of products - use Magento
Informational site with few products - use Joomla w/ Virtuemart

Hands down CS-Cart. google it, I can post a link until I have 15 posts.

They have a free , community version and paid versions.

Takes less server resources than Magento but with lots of features. Been using if for years, since leaving X-Cart.

Re: Which is the best Ecommerce platform?

Large companies normally prefer Magento. It really is the best solution in my eyes.

Magento is packed with so many great features. Any corporate targeting Web Dev companies know that choosing Magento is the right decision. If someone ever came to me and told me they were not using Magento to code my large business. I would instantly turn them down.

For beginners. Magento may not be the right choice. For large businesses, you bet it is.

I use magento for my website, it has a steep learning curve but lot's of options once you figure it out. I tried Joomla and virtumart witch was easy to set up but didn't have all the options that I needed for my site. PrestaShop is also easy to set up but has limited features unless you are will to pay for the add on extensions, witch I think are overpriced. Magento has a lot of free, or reasonably priced add on extensions.

I'm always amazed at the people who try to use wordpress for e-commerce. Trying to shove a round peg in a square hole.

Just did a ton of research about a year ago for our new site and picked Magento. It is slow, and it's a beast. But it's also awesome once you get it up and running.

Re: Which is the best Ecommerce platform?

Another vote for Interspire shopping cart and the hosted version, Big Commerce. For most small and medium sized businesses, they are the perfect solution.

I've tried Magento and several others but have come back to Interspire/Big Commerce as my solution of choice. They are very easy to install and customize. You can do pretty much anything with them on the front end. The checkout is very user-friendly for the customer and there are some great stats in the back end.

Ive used about 8 different ones over the last few years. My favorite is definitely Open Cart. Based on the ease of setup and the ability to customise the code. Free too..

Re: Which is the best Ecommerce platform?

I've used quite a few and all of the above have their pluses and minuses.

Big Commerce and Magento are certainly good but can get expensive if you have a ton of products. They also tend to require a good deal more technical expertise.

I switched all of my websites over to Zulu Cart after using osCommerce/creLoaded for years. I like the flexibility and that I don't have to ever go into cPanel to do anything. It's all done from the Admin panel and there are no templates. You can create anything you want in in colors/sizes you want by just dropping things onto the page. It's also very SEO friendly.

Fortunately, almost all of the carts out there have free trials, so you can play with them all and see what works best for you!

Moving right along....

I've tried zen cart in the past and never got it past ugly... Dropped that project. Have been working with CafeCommerce, a paid service by dream host... And, I'm not to excited to keep paying for the fugly site.

...So, I'm on the hunt for a new ecommerce platform also and I'm really liking the thought of Open Cart and a paid template.

I'm fairly tech savvy and also think Magento could be a good option, but one of the problems were having at CafeCommerce is slow loading times, so I'd hate to trade one CMS for another and keep the problem.

Any other creative DIY solutions I should check out before pulling the trigger in the next couple days?

Magento obviously is the choice for many. However it really depends on what your selling and where the money goes. If your just selling digital products and the money goes straight to paypal, why not wp estore?

Re: Which is the best Ecommerce platform?

If you are fine with using ready templates, use Magento. If you need to customise your cart or website, then choose virtuemart (Joomla) or WooCommerce (Wordpress). Magento is simply to difficult to customise due to its advance php programming.

Today, "Magento Developers" are in a great demand. Reason behind it is that, Magento has become one of the most popular eCommerce software in current time. If any one wants to make an online store, the first preference is always "MAGENTO".

Hi,
I have worked on Magento platform for a period of 6 months, I feel it is one of the best. Many customizations according the business requirements are available to improve our business. But I would like to say that there is one downside in using magento i.e, website will be slower. Rest all I felt excellent.

James

There are many ecommerce platforms. I use a cart software app for my mobile commerce site which I find quite user-friendly. Online shopping, mobile payment and various other online transactions are so easy using it. If you want to use it for your mcommerce site, you can install it in your cell phone.

Re: Which is the best Ecommerce platform?

Tried loads over the years including virtuemart, opencart, oscommerce, magento, cubecart etc. In recent times have settled upon two platforms. CS-Cart for large complex sites. It's also the platform of choice for those that need to migrate off the old Interspire platform that has been retired. CSCart Pro ($295) is better than Magento in my opinion. Magento has loads of advanced features, but is still a beast. Good for coders, not customers. CS Cart Pro has a quicker setup, faster, nicer management tools and virtually bugfree.

If you like software as a service and avoid the hosting issues, then BigCommerce is okay too and I've a couple retail clients using it. But like Shopify becomes costly when you've thousands of products.

The other nice startup option for 2012 is WordPress with the Woocommerce plugin. I recently migrated an old Cubecart system with 1,500 products in 80 categories onto this, with stunning results and all done in under half the time it would take to update this old shop to Magento. The client loves the fact that she now has an advanced blogging and CMS platform at no added cost.

The banking and shipping add-ons for woocommerce has exploded the last few months and code improved immensely since the early versions. For greater flexibility in design customisation I recommend the Genesis framework and not Woothemes own, although if you're scared of css and coding, then the standard woothemes and their ecommerce themes are adequate. But the new drag and drop Pagelines 2.0 Wordpress framework is worth a look too and compatible with the Woocommerce plugin. Regardless of the framework chosen, the free WordPress SEO (Yoast) addon is incredible and does a really good job of getting more search traffic.

Re: Which is the best Ecommerce platform?

Magento is not for shared server... i see most of the enterprise companies using their custom shopping cart which is quite expensive according to their customization. Well i have 2 website which is running on CS-CART but the problem in cs-cart they don't have enough addon and support was also not so good, they always first want money, even we ask simple question but in magento they have 500+ extension/addon which is definintely useful for everything like SEO, optimization etc...
