I notice a lot of sites that are kind of plain, with white background and white page colors with black print and maybe some colored boxes here and there. Often it seems like these sites are top sites but I like some of the smaller sites with some color to them. Does anyone know the most common color for a web site and is there any kind of study information as to what colors attract people to stay on your site depending on your site. Example pink might be ok for a baby site would by really bad for a football site. Thanks Mark

If you google "color psychology" you'll find some great content on what colors mean and what are the best ways to use them.

I prefer anything except black, because normally I associate black sites with sites being hacked. I guess the hacked sites I seen are mostly black, that's why the perception.

It really depends on what services you offer and your personality is. If you are offering flowers, invitations etc. then it should be attracted and more on light colors. Don't use heavy colors and neon colors in everything because it attracts tiredness of the eye. You should mix and match so that you will get a perfect color combination for your site. I suggest it should be appropriate on what you offers.

The colors in the website should not be too colorful except when you are making website for children. So the colors used should be gentle on the eye so that a viewer can spend more time on your website which would increase its visibility and increase your business.

I don't believe on typical designing, actually there are a lot of designers neglect human psychology that which color human like and pay attention and what color combination should be. Only great designers keep in mind these kinds of things therefore their designs get attention.

Colors depend on theme and niche of the website to which it belongs. Here I am giving an example website which has used colors in a correct manner to define its theme softly. indianluxurytours.com try to have these soft colors in a website.

Colourful websites can be nice, it just depends on what colours you use, some website I see they just hurt my eyes, but others the colours go nicely together. Most people use white/light colours because they are pretty neutral and are safe options since these colours won't drive people away from their website, it is also related to Psychology, different colours mean different things.

That's all up to you, you can go for whatever the color combination you like, however there are some colors that represent a particular niche like for corporate websites different shades of blue are considered as a kind of standard.

It is also true that color trends are changed with the passage of time
