Blog on seperate wordpress installation???

I recently had a wp site created and the designer loaded it as two installations, the main site (which included home page, contact, etc) and the blog. Because of this, to have administrative access to the entire site I have to be logged in to both. Furthermore, any changes made to the header/footer/widgets/general format of one doesn't apply to the other. I have to separately modify the other as well if I want them (the entire site as a whole) to be uniform. Does this sound right? I have several single-page html sites but this is my first wp site, so it's all new to me. Upon asking the designer about this he said that he created it that way because "blogs are treated differently now due to the panda update." Is this the best way to set up a wp site? Does having the blog on its own installation offer any advantage, seo or otherwise? Thnx

No, it doesn't sound right. It's NOT right. What the designer said about panda is not right.

I have a feeling you're being led down the garden path because your designer doesn't really know what they're doing.

So just for clarification for the wp idiot in the room (i.e. me), a wp site should have all pages (the entire site) loaded on through a single installation. I'm trying to figure out what he was talking about, although it may simply be as you suggested that he doesn't know what he's doing. Aside from the obvious seo measures to an existing site, is there anything related to panda that should affect how one's site should be loaded on, or is the loading of a site a standard process?

Nope, not correct - you can easily have both static pages and blog posts all within one single install of Wordpress. If you want a tab in your navigation called "Blog" and have an overview page of all your latest blog posts, then create a BLANK page and name it Blog and choose the blog page template (if you theme has one). Publish it. Do not write content on this page called blog.

Then create and publish blog POSTS within Wordpress Posts > Add New and those published posts will display on the page called blog.

Agree, 1 install and a page on that install that contains your blog. No need to have 2 seperate WP installations. I would have someone make those changes/integrate the 2 installs into 1.

^^ That's not really accurate. WordPress pulls posts from an index.php and displays the single posts with single.php.

If the theme doesn't contain a single.php creating a blank page isn't going to do anything to display the posts.

The functionality of WordPress has improved greatly over the years and it is now easy to have a static, unique page that is not "bloggy" looking but is actually part of your blog.

To do this, you simply go to the WordPress Admin Panel >> Settings >> Reading and set the static home page there. This will be a static "page" that you created in WordPress and then you can have a blog category under that.

Two WP installations is not the way to go and does not relate to Panda at all.

Panda update thing isnt correct in this context. Since the blog is part of the site it should be part of the software IMO, unless you intentionally want that to be.

You could simply use the posts for the blogs, you still can do that.

Now one issue is if you would have a separate domain or sub domain for the blog. In that case also you can use wordpress MULTI-SITE feature along with Wordpress MU plugin. That would allow you use single wp installation to be used for multiple domains.

Im with the op, I still dont get how to do this. I use mystique theme and thought I set it correctly but cannot get it to work. I used core tweaks plugin and followed directions.
It told me to add another post to delete the og generic post. Then set the name and select what "page" I want to be my static page. Now I can only find my post that i was told to create through the site map, but could not link to it under a category menu where i have links to other pages...and dont ask me about child themes, Ill start my own topic on that

Your problem might be using plugins that you don't understand what they do.

For having a static frontpage (as a Page, not post) AND another webpage where your posts are displayed - is built-in in WP for ages.

      Steps to follow:
      1. Create 2 Pages (NOT POSTS!!!)
      - call one Home and the other Blog
leave the Page titled Blog empty = do NOT write anything into it!
      - add whatever Welcome msg you want to the Page title Home

      2. wp-admin > Settings > Reading and select frontpage as a static page
      - below it select 2 [TWO] Pages from the dropdown:
      a) Home for frontpage
      b) Blog for "posts page"

      3. Save settings.

      Done.

You are right on about not understanding what some plugins do. I thought I read the directions correctly. Your directions look easy to understand and I will paste these into a note for future use. Thanks for the great advice...AGAIN !!...just checked out your link to your WSO. Sounds like something I should've bought a long time ago...Is it still valid/up to date ?
