Old HTML Site and adding WP

I have an old HTML sit ( about 14 years old) It is currently a PR3 after years of neglect. At one point it was a PR4 ;-(

I am adding a Kindle element to that business and want to add a WP install.

Here is what I was thinking... Leave the HTML there (it has LOTS of good backlinks) and traffic coming to it would be a good market for the new Kindle component

Put the WP install in front of it.

Change the file name for the HTML index/Home page and add links to the new WP home page

Add appropriate links to the HTML pages in the WP install

The site is hosted at HG on Linux

I will be using WP as a blog with weekly posts and also selling from it

The HTML site is so huge it would be killer to try to modify it and I don't want to run into 404 problems or break the numerous backlinks

This way, someone coming to the Homepage would see the new site, but you could
still get all over both portions (HTML and WP) from any page

Does this sound like a good strategy?

Installing a new WP site to serve as the platform for new content works fine. I have done this for one of my clients. You can also try migrating the HTML site to WP using HTML to WP plugin. It automatically adds redirections to avoid any problems with indexing/missing pages.

Yes this is a good idea and using a redirect plugin can even help you to move the entire HTML code to WP.Good luck with that!

      Thanks for the answers, guys.

The old HTML site has hundreds of images, so I am not sure I want to try to move it to WP...

at least not at this time. The images are my old catalog and I am no longer selling those items... There are a number of pages with free goodies which account for most of the traffic and I want to be absolutely sure that they can be accessed. ;-)

I'll go ahead and put up WP in front.

      Thank you very much!

I am surprized all these smart people didn't ask you about what you meant by "in front"?
