Hi everyone,

I do have a website and know a little bit of this and that - but a friend of mine wants to build a two page website just to advertise his offline business. I really do not have a clue about two page websites so wondered if anyone could advise me? From my research, it seems that free websites don't allow you to have a proper domain name. Is this right? Does anyone have any recommendations I can pass on to my friend?

Thanks,

Krista

You can still find free hosting but most of them are Ad-Supported and allow the use of your domain name you pick. You would have to transfer the DNS record to there IP's.

Hope that answer's your question, if you need one that does I can send you a private message

You can find dirty cheap hosting out there for $5 a month. A domain is $10 a year. Granted this hosting isn't that good, it's better than having ads all over your website.

    Hi Krista,

I recommend staying away from free hosting especially if the website is for a business; who would do business with a company that doesn't pay for hosting? I surely wouldn't.

Web hosting today isn't a novelty and is certainly affordable even if for those who are trying/wanting to start a business and still have a job elsewhere.

So, if a website is just 1 page or 100 pages, please do your friend a favor and recommend a paid hosting solution such as:

Web Hosting Services, Reseller Hosting, VPS Hosting, and Dedicated Servers by HostGator - $7.16/month
    Web Hosting, Domain Names, eCommerce - Bluehost.com - $4.95/month
    1&1 Internet - Home - $3.49/month
    Web Hosting & Domain Names by FatCow.com - $3.15/month
Web Hosting : Professional Web Hosting from Just Host - $3.75/month
iPage | Web Hosting, Unix Hosting, E-Mail, Web Design - $2.95/month
Web Hosting, VPS Hosting, Dedicated Hosting | InMotion Hosting - 5.95/month

These hosting providers are not in any particular order. Each provider has their unique selling point. Do your due diligence and read reviews. You'll find positive and negative reviews for all providers.

I've been with HostGator for 7 years simply because of their support is top notch and my sites never had any issues or downtime. Do I recommend them? Yes. Are there people here on the Warrior Forum that doesn't like them? You bet.

Do some research, read reviews, and make a recommendation to your friend based on your findings.

    Best,
    Logan

Well, you are all a friendly and helpful lot. Thankyou!!

I joined another forum but got no replies.

Ok so first of all, how do I thank you all? Is it the little book icon (says infraction when hovered over)?

And just a couple more questions if that's ok:

You know all those one page affiliate sales pages you see? Are they paid for hosting pages?

Secondly Loganwenger big thanks for all the suggestions. My friend will need a contact form for people to contact him - do any of the organisations you've listed allow that on their cheapy rate (unlimited emails)? Only if you know this off the top of your head - if not I will go and see.

Another option - if he did insist on a free website and had to put up with his name on the end of their domain name - could he register some better names and just forward those to the free website? I really think he will go for paid hosting as I can't see him wanting ads on the site - especially if he isn't being paid for them.

      Many many thanks!!

        Hi Krista,

        You're welcome.

If you are referring to squeeze pages/landing pages those are hosted on paid solutions.

As for the contact form, the messages will be sent to the email address upon submit and the hosting providers that I mentioned in my previous post do include email service. I'm not a big fan of this email solution and I typically use Google Apps Free for my email service and change the MX entries in my cPanel.

If your friend is adamant on using free hosting, you can as you mentioned buy a domain name and can forward to the free hosting such as:

        somebusinessname.com ==> freehostingservice/accountname

Here are some ad free free hosting providers:

Free Hosting, Free Web Hosting, Free cPanel Hosting, Free PHP Hosting - HostCrypt.com
        Free Website Hosting
        https://rowebca.com/
SixServe - Free Unlimited No Ads cPanel Web Hosting
        HelioHost
Free Web Hosting with cPanel, PHP, and no Ads
Free Web Hosting, Shared Web Hosting, Virtual Private Servers, Domain Registration, SSL Certificates by Host-ed.net

DISCALIMER: I know nothing about the free hosting sites mentioned above, they are provided for your informational purposes only.

The reason I recommend people staying away from free hosting is that they could be here today and gone tomorrow. Good luck!

        Best,
        Logan

P.S. - You asked how to "Thank" someone. All you need to do is listed in each post at the bottom right there is a "Thanks" button.

I wasn't suggesting free hosting but trying to answer the question in the orginal post. I wouldn't suggest paid hosting even for a 2 page business (hopfully expanded in the future). The above post has many examples of cheap hosting to start off with.

    Hi Logan,

Thanks very much indeed for this. This is everything he will need. He fixes computers for a living but doesn't know about websites. I will forward all this info onto him. Now then, in the bottom right of your posts, all I have is "Quote", "Multiquote" and "Quick Reply". There is no thankyou tab. Wonder if its cos I am new. Will have another look around. I think I might just stay around here anyway so if I post a bit more - maybe the thankyou tabs will show.....

    Lemme go have another look.....

Free web hosting mainly results in headaches and frustration in the long run. It's well worth the small monthly fee to go with a paid hosting company.

Better is if you buy a cheap webhost but if you are looking for a free solution then I might be able to help you as I myself used the below mentioned things.
1- create an account at blogspot.com. Create a blog with the name of your friend's business. Choose a theme for the blog that has two pages. Use it and done.
2- go to Co.cc and register a free domain. Now go to 000webhost.com and open an account. 000webhost is like a server for your website.
Now what you have to do is to make pages and upload them to 000webhost.com. It works just like real time web hosting.

Krista, definitely encourage your friend to buy his own hosting, it's very cheap. The problem with free hosting is you are using someone else's property, so you must abide by all their rules and terms of service. And if you don't, or if they say you don't, they can lock you out of your site and remove it from their server without notice. If this happens (and it has happened to a huge number of people, including me), all your work is gone, permanently, and you cannot get it back. You lose everything and you have no recourse. If you have your own hosting this can't happen to you (unless you're breaking the law, like child porn or spamming, etc.).

Tell him to make a WordPress based site, it's free to install, extremely simple to use, there are thousands of free themes (layout and how it looks). A total beginner can have a 2 page site up and going in a couple of hours, and it will look good and work well. I've built a lot of mini-sites like this for people locally, and it is really easy to do.

No kidding .. go try it out.
I just had a quick look at the link you provided and it starts from $9.99 or free if you don't want a personal domain name so not sure what the $1 is you mentioned?

Hi Logan if you are there,

You said you are with Hostgator. Well I have been looking and am thinking of going with them myself for my next website(s). Have I read right that for less than $7 a month I can have as many domains as I like? And if so, then I can make one for my friend?

      Thanks.

        Hi Krista,

HostGator's Hatchling Plan is $7.16/month only allows a single domain and the Baby Plan allows for unlimited domains for $9.95/month. As a new customer, you pay $7.96 your first month, then $9.95/month thereafter (you can get your first month for 1 cent if you sign up through someone else's affiliate link - Google it).

However, the Baby Plan is for domains that you own and not your customer or client domains.

HostGator frowns upon hosting domains other than your own on their Baby Plan because they also have reseller hosting for something like $24.95/month and they want people to either use the reseller hosting for domains not owned/controlled by you.

I have used the various hosting packages at HostGator from the Hatchling Plan, to Reseller Hosting, to VPS hosting and I have found that the Baby Plan meets my online needs.

If you want to offer clients/customers/friends HostGator hosting you could always ask them to sign up through your affiliate link or charge a fee as a service to setup the hosting for them (the yearly hosting price + your time).

        Best,
        Logan

Get a domain name, you can also get free domain name from co.cc, use free or paid hosting which ever you like.

You can find many free HTML templates on the internet, download anyone you like. Then download a html editor. Komodo Edit, Kompozer, eclipse, netbeans all of these are free. Using these edit the HTML template that you downloaded to your liking. If you cant then hire some one to do it for you. odesk.com, guru.com and elance.com are some of the best freelancing site you will find loads of people who will help you, and yes you will have to pay them.

    Thanks
