Good idea for a plug-in, how to create it?

Hey Warriors,

I have recently thought of a pretty good idea for a Wordpress plug-in and I'd like to begin creation of it. To my knowledge, the plug-in is a completely unique idea but something that would still be able to assist a variety of Wordpress websites, including my own! As you might expect, I don't have any real coding experience and I'd like to find a developer willing to partner with me to complete the plug-in.

I'm completely new to the plug-in game and at this point, it's only an idea, but what places should I look at for a developer, what resources should I look into, etc. If anyone who has experience creating plug-ins can lead me down the right path, or is interested in hearing my idea, please let me know. I'd appreciate any feedback or comments on the process of creating plug-ins!

Thanks,
Rob

Have you tried going to some outsourcing sites like odesk?

Keep in mind that in addition to outsourcing the creation of your plug-in, you have to maintain it. You may need to update your plug-in for each new WordPress version/subversion release.

ONCE UPON A TIME there was a Warrior named Bob. He was sad. And frustrated. You see, Warrior Bob spent every last nickel on Internet Marketing e-books. But nothing panned out. No traffic. No sales. He was one sad Bob. Then one day Bob found a bottle. He rubbed it and out came a Genie who granted him 3 wishes. For Wish #1 Bob asked for a pet Dragon. Wish Granted. For Wish #2, Bob wanted Warriors' websites seen by 53 million TV viewers, for under $5 per broadcast. The Genie said... (click here)

I outsource my coding on Elance. They have escrow so the programmer gets paid when/if the job gets done. Post your project and review the bidder's feedback from previous customers. I haven't partnered with anyone ... I just get it coded and then sell it.

Be careful about partnering with unknowns. You may want to have a non-compete signed before you give away your idea

If you're referring to me, I won't sell/use your idea for myself - I will sign something if I need to prove it to you!

I'm not referring to anyone specifically. Just issuing a warning to the OP so he doesn't get his idea stolen.

It's a good point - if there's anything you can't prove was yours originally it's an idea!

    my advice

    - write down all you plan in detail
    - draw the layout of the plugin control panel, name all the function and explain how it work

    example: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/9013501/scre...ing%20copy.jpg

    then outsource it on odesk

you will save a lot of time and money if you have clear instruction and visual drawing.

beware of the freelancer, they always promise to complete it 100% b4 u confirm them, but normally the project will stuck in middle.

Rob, you might also want to think about posting on the official WordPress job board:
    WordPress Jobs

Been hired from that a few times, attracts decent clients & developers. Or there's a developers directory on wordpress.org.

Make a list about your plugin would do, check if some pluging already makes some tasks. Go to rentacoder.com (AKA vworker) and post your project.

They are not so cheap like in other places but you will get a good work, but before get the coder to work for you state that you will need he makes the updates and you will get the rights to do whatever you want and claim as the author/coder.
