Wordpress Site Sale And Move - Advice Needed

I recently sold a wordpress site on Flippa and intended to let the new owner have the xml file to import once he had set the domain up on his own hosting. This seemed a simple way to transfer the site and I had done this previously without any problems.

I pushed the domain and then let him have the xml file to import into wordpress. He has come back to me saying that he has had several error messages on the import that all say Failed To Import Media. Has anyone experienced this and is there an easy way to solve it.

I realise there are other ways to transfer sites but as the site was quite a straight forward one with very few plugins I thought this would be the easiest way to transfer. Now that I do not have the domain, is there a simple way to get the site set up as it was. I still have the wordpress files on my server.

    Thanks for your help and the pdf. I will have a look through and hopefully I can resolve this.

    I am still not sure why exporting and importing an xml file has not worked. If anyone has had the same error message then I would be interested to know any reasons why this happened.

      Exporting the xml file only gives the buyer the posts. It does not give them the theme, the theme functions, the plugins, etc. In order to give them the entire site, you need to give them all the files and database.

    simple, move ur site using cpanel info, i've been doing such things for more than 100+ times. so basicly what u have to do is, zip ur sold site in ur cpanel, send it to ur client cpanel host, edit the exported sql from ur site to match ur client site target, then u completed.

    If the buyer knows how, I would simply give him/her the username and password to my hosting control panel and let them take it from there. Remembering of course to change them after they are done. Just a suggestion.

    Thanks for all of the posts. As the new owner in this case has already installed wordpress and has imported the xml file, I thought I would do some more searching around on this topic. It looks as though I may need to also send a copy of the wp-contents folder to the new owner to upload. Has anyone else transferred a site in this way who can confirm this will solve the issue.

      That's not the ideal way to transfer an entire site so that it is exactly as it was when purchased, but it's better than just sending the xml file.

      He still won't have the options set as you had them set in the theme and he won't have plugins configured that required settings. All that is in the database.

    Just use BackupBuddy to transfer the whole site

    edit...seems like you don't have the domain already, maybe you can still access it using the IP of your server? if you can, i'd suggest BackupBuddy, i can give you a copy if you want

    Yes, backup buddy will works well. Or you can use free wordpress plugin called Duplicator. I have made succesfull migration using this plugin.

    Is your original WordPress site still working? When your client's WordPress import the xml file, it will download the media files(images) from your site at the same time.
    So you must keep your site working until he success finishing importing.
