Outsourced web designer access to my account?

Hello,
I just got a ready made website and the outsoucer wants access to my cpanel to upload files. Can anyone give best advice to proceed with this?

    you might need to have them access. depending on your website technology he might need to setup database. if he needs that he would need access to your cp. otherwise you could simply have him a ftp access.

    If you don't trust a developer, stop right now. Even if you do not provide access to cPanel, you will be using his/her codes on your site. An unscrupulous designer can add malicious code. So you have to work with a trusted developer.

    Yes, If you are not trust a developer, you can get the code from the developer and upload it by yourself.

    easy, zipup all ur files and mysql database in prepare when he/she goes wrong then u can restore ur database and site by 1 click.

    A good developer will automatically create a backup of your site before making nay change. Even when you upload the files yourself, you are still at the mercy of the developer as far as coding/viruses in the files are concerned. You cannot eliminate the risk.

    Thank you very much for your feedback all. I don't know the designer but is a trusted source (good ref's, reviews, etc) from other folks which means I don't trust. I'll make sure there is a back up... Terry

    I don't know why someone would deliberately want to harm your site? It seems that if the individual is a developer or designer, there is no reason why you shouldn't give them the information. Especially if you are paying them for their work.

      I think you're probably right and it would be wonderful to just blindly trust without taking precautions. However your overall statement is very wreckless IMHO. I like to trust but also verify and I simply came here to ask the best course of action to accomplish that and protect may interests. Thank you for your input. :-)

        Hi Terry,

        As a freelance developer myself, I can understand why the designer would want access to your account, although I don't generally ask for cpanel access as that's too much access in my opinion and I don't want to get blamed if the site got hacked at the same time I was working on a client's site.

        Anyway, if you are using WordPress and you already have it installed and running, and what you had outsourcede was a custom theme, then all the designer really needs is FTP access to the directory where WordPress is installed and maybe an account to the Wordpress site.

        If you can create a separate FTP account for the designer, then you should be good. You can delete the designer's accounts after everything is done.

        But generally, as long as the service provider has had a lot of feedback or has a good number of projects done in their portfolio then I think you can "trust" them with your account - but only because the majority of us are more interested in working on projects and getting paid than hacking away and fooling around with (unpaid) our client's sites - which is not a good way for us to grow our business.
