Website domains--Questions-

I am a noob to the whole internet thing (but I am learning) slowly and trying to understand. I have run offline businesses all my life and I believe in order to be successful in anything you do you cannot just jump in the middle and learn something you have to go from the beginning and understand the why's and how is works. So with that being said here goes:
------------------------------------------------------------------------

So I have realized I knew nothing about websites in the past and I invested becoming a member of Warrior forums and now I am learning and reading and I have invested and purchased a great deal of wso's, e-books and videos etc. I now know a bit more of websites.
-----------------------------------------------------

So you get the domain first, and then you get hosting and then your website created and then your website is live. I get that. Here is my question below:
------------------------------------------------------
I went to godaddy last night and then I said WOW okay now I need to learn "all this" and understand this whole process. If you are starting a business or even launching a website for an existing business.

So I go to get a domain name and I realized a few things.

1. Domain names are cheap and I am reading on go daddy that you can get many endings .com, .net, .co, .us and I left go daddy and googled what the point was of having multiple extensions and I was reading hundreds of articles on Google and seems some people have different Views and ideas about this.------------------------
Some articles state the best way to do this is to buy up as many extensions at once stopping others from buying domains similar to yours or your business name to protect it. At this rate if a person does this domains names wouldn't be cheap anymore as ten or 15 extensions could run up to 300.00 a year not including hosting. Some people say just stick with the dot com and that is it. Some other articles said that point of view is wrong and you should buy up as many as you can to protect your business and image. What is your point of view on this?

2.
Then after you decide how many domains you are going to buy then there is this whole "security" thing of either showing your contact info or not to show contact info for a who is directory. I have talked with a few people and I have read articles off of google that said if you own the domain and someone looks you up why would you want to hide it. If you own a business you should want others to know how to contact you. Other people said you want to pay the additional money to keep your domain private. So what is your point of view on this.

3rd question
So then you get past those two parts and the last part is How many additional emails do you want. So a few people said don't buy any extra emails as once you get the hosting you will have so many emails that comes with hosting. So is this the best way?
Last question and I really hope no one slams me for being a dumb asss on this one lol. I am trying to visualize how this whole email thing works. I basically thought your website all your emails say mark@xxxbusiness dot com goes directly to your website and then I was picturing something like gmail, you log in and check your business dot com email messages. Well I am lost as 2 different people laughed at me and said there is no such thing. They said that when you have emails for your website you have to forward them to your personal email? So I really don't understand this concept. Please enlighten me.
Then comes hosting I am studying this right now. Thank you in advance for answering these questions.
--------------------------------------------------------------
I am realizing Warrior forums is (I believe) for people that already know all these answers to all these questions but I felt I can go on any forum board and ask questions and receive many answers but it seems to me that warrior forums is where it is at - proven leaders and experts that have the knowledge from years of experience and information is the best on here and I value information as I BELIEVE- information and knowledge is the power behind any true success.

Let me make it simple for you: NEVER ever go to goddady...
Any other decent registrar is way better!

Some registrars offer free or very cheap whois privacy. Whether to use it or not it's a personal choice - like "do you want to be in the phonebook or not". (I know mental health workers who don't want their patients to find them, LOL)

#3 is irrelevant... you are confused because GoDaddy tried to screw you up by offering BS offers. Forget them, and forget all the "dilemmas" they tried to plant into your head.

Get a decent registrar AND a simple host (they should be TWO different companies!!!) and you will be a happy camper.

    Keep it simple...

    Get a domain.
    Get hosting.
    Start building a website.

Although, if you REALLY are experienced in building brick & mortar real businesses, you should know better: amateurs will make amateur-looking websites and pros will make professionally looking websites.
Real business people don't mess with websites - they pay/hire people to do it for them. So, unless you want to build a webmaking business... why do you need all this stuff?

See everyone keeps saying this "don't worry about all this stuff" The reason I do is and I believe I have always been successful in everything I do because I am COMPETENT in everything I do. I ask questions I try and learn everything behind what I am doing. The definition of competent: 1. properly or sufficiently qualified or capable. So if I understand the dynamics behind and I hire a web designer at least I have the understanding of what they are doing. Or even this as I purchased many wso's on buying website templates and then outsourcing the work. Well one thing I believe in is to be a leader or to lead means you are "competent" to lead and tell someone what you want them to do. You cannot be "competent" if you yourself don't understand and then you can't lead. How are you going to outsource and say I want you to do this or that when you have no clue at all how to do this or that. I am very good and successful at what I do. It has never been by luck or chance. It has been because I do my homework, I understand the principals and dynamics behind what I am doing.

    1. Go to GoDaddy or NameCheap (my preferred option), and buy a domain name. It is enough to buy just the .com domain, or .com along with .net & .org for big companies.
    2. NameCheap gives you free privacy settings to keep your WHOIS info safe.
    3. Buy Web Hosting from HostGator (or DreamHost or BlueHost). Get HostGator's BABY plan.
    4. Change the nameserver with your domain registrar (GoDaddy/NameCheap) to the ones given by HostGator.
    5. Start building your website.

ADD: Email with your own domain, also have similar features like Gmail or other email service. You can read them through your cPanel link or a specific email page. Of course, you need to log in. You can also forward the email to your Gmail or any other address.

I don't think you have to register all the extensions for your domain name unless your business is in a large scale which in that case would be a good idea to protect your brand. As to what extensions, it really depends what type of business it is I mean if it's just a local shop then getting you're country code's extension (e.g. .ca if it's in Canada, .au for Australia) is just enough. But if it's international then definitely get a .com however it's up to you, if a .com version of you domain name is available then why not get it.

I don't think you'd have to worry too much on the security thing since what you should put in are the business info and not your personal one. However since most customers don't really look at the Whois info and what you could end up with is a lot of spam on your email address then you should register with a registrar the offers a Whois privacy protection. Godaddy offers one but they are expensive while you can get it from Namecheap for free for the first year or at Internet.bs for free for life. I would suggest going with Internet.bs and use the partial private whois where you can put in your business name but all the other data like email address are hidden.

You don't need to buy email address'. Once you get a web hosting account, you can setup as many as you want depending on your plan. Basically when you have a web hosting account, you will have a email accounts area where you can create an email check you inbox etc. once you add an email address of course. Or you can take a look at Google Apps (they also have a free version available) and replace your MX Records with theirs (it's quite easy to do) in the control panel. With that you can go to gmail and check your business' email which you can also use with other Google Products like Drive, Youtube, Docs etc.

        Hope that helped

Iv'e heard some bad things about GoDaddy. Their customer service and some technical difficulty issues, however I do not have an account there and many swear by them. I am fairly new as well and I understand your confusions. I am with Cool Handle and they have great customer service.

Just get the .com or your preferred extension, no need to buy up all the rest unless you are a large company or have your own product your trying to sell and protect.
Godaddy is fine to use but they sure can hit you will so many extras that their pricing becomes outragous. Never, ever host with them as they are expensive, slow and unresponsive. Go with Hostgator for sure with hosting.
For domain names I have started using NameSilo. They offer free privacy if needed, free domain hacking protection, fast name hand over and great price at $8.99 or less for bulk orders. You can get an extra $1 off buy using the code lucky71. Their simple, uncluttered interface is a pleasure to use especially after having to put up with godaddys crap filled offer screens every time you just want to buy a domain.
One thing I really like about NameSilo is that they have an input section for your name servers so you can do it all during registration.
Hope it helps out, good luck

Your 1st question... I would just buy a .com and not the other extensions.
2nd question.... Yes you want to have whois privacy on your domain name.
3rd question... You will be able to setup your email accounts within your hosting control panel. e.g. mm22005@thedomainyouareregistering.com there is no need to buy anything extra.
You can setup to receive and send emails from the email accounts you setup through Outlook, Gmail, Thunderbird, your iPhone, etc. All you have to do is put in your Mail Server Username which is your email address, the Incoming Mail Server which is usually mail.thedomainyouareregistering.com, the Outgoing Mail Server: which is usually mail.thedomainyouareregistering.com, and your email password.
