Time taken for design?

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for a middle-of-the-road answer to this question, please.

If I were to hire a full-time Wordpress Designer, and given a detailed specification document for a landing page, what would be a reasonable time for him to produce a detailed 1st draft mockup in Photoshop?

Then, once a final draft has been produced and accepted, what would be a reasonable time for him to convert the psd. to a WP template?

    If it's just one landing page and he has full instructions, then it shouldn't take more than 2-4 hours to design it. Plus another 1-2 hours to turn it into a theme, if it's really just one landing page.

    I have been in web design for a few years now, and these are my times:

    Finding out what the client wants: 30 minutes - 1 hour.
    Initial design in Photoshop: 4 hours + 30 minutes of adjustments from client.
    PSD to HTML/template: 5 - 6 hours(depending on the complexity of the design) + 1 hours of adjustments from client.
    Basic SEO once online: 30 minutes.

    Total: 10 hours - 13 hours spread over 2 - 3 weeks.

    Nathan, that sounds reasonable. It does depend though, because if you have a good WP theme like PageLines, the WP aspect can be implemented very quickly.

    A good rule of thumb is to work with the level of experts for whom the technical stuff is a non-issue and doesn't take any time at all. So then, you work solely on the business challenges, on the design, on creating multiple variations to test, etc.

    Sure, then "oops" what if your designer does not know how to implement 8 variations of a design and test? Well, then you either acquire the knowledge or find someone for whom that kind of testing is super-easy.

    I help clients with this kind of stuff...

    If you are not sure about the time-based hiring, why not ask for a quote for the entire project? This way you do not have to worry about how long it takes for the designer to get the job done.

      I don't have a problem with time-based I just want to know what to expect.

    If you provided every little detail and he understands it all and his experience of designs and work flow of using photoshop

    Would average around probably 1 day

    As for the coding and stuff, probably half a day or 1 day.
