Logos are important, but I'd wait until I had a profitable business before worrying about the logo. It won't make or break you.

Logos and websites are your reputation among customers or clients. Hence, make sure that you have designed your website as well as logos by professionals only.

Very good ideas. Branding is key to success of any business. I would like to add on that a brand is much more than a logo. It's a memorable message a business creates when it effectively promotes the emotional attachment it wants its clients to have with its business. Of course that emotional connection can be created by a logo, a message, a behavior, etc.. It's therefore important to build your brand right from the time you begin your business.

Logos are important but not make or break important. I have many sites that perform well without any banners or logos.

Then I've sussed and wasted time on logos and banners without getting on with building the site... I guess it goes both way but unless there is a way to track things... I cannot agree that logos/banners influence the visitor.

As long as you provide value in the content... that's all the visitors need for the most part.

Logos are important in brand recognition, so if your brand is important to you then your logo should be carefully planned and professionally designed (Ex. McDonald's, Coca-Cola). Not all companies and websites need this type of brand recognition though, so I think it's important to first decide what your overall marketing goals are before spending a lot of time and money on a logo. As stated above, logos are not usually a make or break design aspect and a lot of energy can be wasted on something that may not affect your business at all.
Another thing to keep in mind is sometimes the most effective logos are simple and to the point, meaning you can often create a great looking logo with just some text and text effects in Photoshop or Gimp.
