Our Neighborhood Association "had" a blog.wordpress.com site put up by an EX-member who left town without revealing log-ins to the site, which now is outdated and over 2 years old. We have NO access to the site, not even being able to take it down! We have now started a new neighborhood.org site but would like to "lift" some of the graphics and layout to use in our new WP site. Is it possible? How is it done? Also, what would you suggest as to getting rid of the now defunct site... WP says that ONLY the maker/pw holder/email address holder can access/change/or dump the site. Googling our neighborhood pulls up the old site but it is not up to date and misleads searchers and is incomplete. Does a xxx.wordpress.com site ever expire? Any ideas appreciated.

The graphics you can probably just right click and save to your computer and then upload to your new site. The 'layout' would depend on the theme. If you view the source of one of the pages usually you can figure out what theme is being used and then just use that on the new site too. Of course, you could tell for sure if you could log into the admin control panel, but if you could do that, then you could take the site down too.

If you definitely can't gain access to the existing site, then building the new site is probably the way to go. If you can do a little careful link building for the new site you may be able to get it to outrank the old site pretty easily.

You may have valid legal recourse here, if the site is using the association name and information, you have certain rights over that information. Check with an attorney. Word to the wise: Whatever you do in your condo association now, make sure whover does any online work signs the proper paperwork assuring that the association is the rightful owner of any content and online properties that are setup by any HOA board member.

      Thanks guys, great help.
I DID discover the theme as instructed, Coraline, so DLed it and will try my hand at it. And I can see where the graphics come from and will try to recover them too. My host (micfo.com... don't laugh) has the latest WP and it is installed... now to get the phpBB forum to show up....
The Association web site was put up as a "favor" from a member who then moved away suddenly and left no log-in info. We have written to WP to try to get the site taken down and their reply was, "No Way, Jose" so porcupine73's suggestion to make it a better site that will outrank the old one may be the only recourse. Did I mention that all this is taking place in Costa Rica? and in Spanish? and CR laws don't apply to WP....
As for who operates the site, me, I give ALL login and PW info to the rest of the Board of Directors immediately, and in writing (email) so that we don't have to go thru this again.
And altho our site isn't intended to be a MoneyMaker, Warrior does seem to have a lot of good information and helpful members. I will drop in again soon. Thanks again.
