Hello dear members,
I have bought a web directory theme from directory press today. I have installed it successfully. But now I am really worried because of customization things. I am downloading their video tutorials. Directory press is huge and I need someone's support who is using this directory already. I need help on payment gateways, pages, listing and categories sections. So if anyone is there who owns directory press theme and running then please let me know.

Thanks in advance.

I have a good friend who has built their site using another PremiumPress theme, Realtor theme. She tells me that the community, of which she is a very active member, is simply invaluable.

And her theme's community is roughly only 20% as active as yours (jewelraz), with the Real Estate forum having 507 threads, 3,175 posts, with Directory Press 3,384 threads and 18,608 posts.

With this kind of support, I'm certain you will be able to find answers for most all of the questions and obstacles that you may encounter.

      Love,
      Marcia

I am building several directories with DirectoryPress. With the recent updates it is a much better value than ever before. By just searching the forums you will find answers to 97.55% of your questions. Any others can be submitted to support for timely help or posted to the forum. Someone will most likely have run into any question you might have and will jump into help.

If I have one complaint about DirectoryPress (DP), it could be that sometimes there are language rifts. I am not a programmer or coder and sometimes the descriptions and instructions used to explain different functions within the software and the WP (Wordpress)/DirectoryPress dashboard don't make sense to me, seems like some was not written with a dummy like me in mind, LOL . Personally I have sorted through the information and have written down some of my own instruction so as not to get confused or discouraged and plan to do a video for others jumping into the deep end of the DP pool. I dove into the deep end this time and I am 3 days into it and my site is looking pretty sexy..PM me and I will send you a link..

Another piece of advice is to stick to the basics and make some key decisions on how your directory is going to operate before you start working on your settings in the WP/DP dashboard. Be economical in the beginning with the features you add because you can add more anytime after the basic directory is up. You should write out a rough draft to guide you through the build:

        1. What URL are you going to use?
        2. Will you be using a logo (what size) or just a text title?
        3. Decide what design/template you will be using as provided in the DP Dashboard. Look at each one and decide if the layout will be well received by your visitors and Members? Decide if you are making a directory that sells listings and is usable for visitors or if your are designing the directory for search engines and Adsense.
        4. Determine permissions. Who gets to see what. Do all visitors get to see all listings or do they have to register to see certain listings?
        5. Determine business member permissions and packages. What will a business be able to post in their listing based on their membership level.
        6. What are the different membership levels, whats included and whats the cost? Monthly, Yearly? Recurring or one time fee? Who will be your payment processor? PayPal, 2Checkout, Google Checkout, Etc.
7.Define for your own usage and direction, who is a visitor and what are they looking for. What does a directory listing member look like and what are they seeking from my service?
8.Do you charge for visitor usage or member usage or both? Will there be FREE options for either or both?
        9. What is a minimum viable product that you will be satisfied with, that offers value to your members..
        10. How do you plan on marketing your directory? PPC, targeted telemarketing, email announcements? Where do you expect your income to come from or is there another reason for building a directory? Are you building it for current clients or as a client acquisition tool?

Please do not answer these questions here, they are just the start of a longer list I am creating for myself as I build my directories out. Don't be afraid of the process, once you have done it once, and kept notes on it, it will be easier going forward. I am finding that the opportunity in directories lies in the fact that few people get to where you are right now, most people who have bought DP or any other directory script quit before they start. That puts you in a very small club that gets smaller and smaller as you progress. And that is where the money lies...

        Cheers!

        Chris

          Another tip for DP users:

Before you even post your first directory listing, figure out what the basic listing will include and know how you plan to find listing sources. Finally , understand how you plan on initially populating the listings, manually, database, scraper, cvs file, DMOZ, etc..

DP has a couple ways for you to do this so locate your source material first..

This is probably good advise for any new directory publisher..

          Cheers!

Would it be too intrusive (and I don't mean to steal this thread) to ask what "niche areas" of directories you're building Chris?

          Thanks,

Sure, wine, solar energy, gambling, physicians......Now in each of these categories you would need to niche down even deeper to get to the specific sub-industry, subject and market, preferably one like me that you have a little knowledge or interest in. I think this is what you have to do now in the directory game.

Each directory may only have a small pool of potential advertisers, maybe 500 to 10,000 nationwide, but each advertiser could bang out a nice sale from my visitors and in a couple cases, gain a little link juice from a PR 4 or PR 5 site. My strategy is to have 6 directories to start, use the same template and child theme, build a minimum viable directory with between 50 and 100 listings each that I populate them with and start selling by phone and seed a few more basic listings each day.

The pitch is that you are calling to confirm their basic/standard directory listing for accuracy. Speak only to the owner or decision maker. Send them their basic account log in while on the phone and ask them to check that the log in works. Offer the upgrade to an Expanded or Featured listing with monthly and yearly prepaid options and explain the benefits, close , embrace and answer their objections and then close again. I have done the math so when they ask for "just a link" to their website or if they want "just a logo" or something, they can buy it ala carte "off the menu" for a minimal monthly fee but it will still be cheaper for them to lay down for an expanded or featured yearly package and "save them money".

            Sweeten the pot.

In the wine niche, I own another site that I use to "throw in" a bonus service that wine industry clients all need at some point and really doesn't cost me anything to include it, and it's a self service with a high perceived value. In the end I will make money on that too..

Online directory publishers that use skilled commissioned sales people or TMs should definitely find a relevant bonus service they can offer in the sales process that has a high perceived value but no real cost to you. It could be a service that is even provided by another company that you JV with.. You might even be able to create and income flow from the giveaway/bonus..

I'm kinda going on here, sorry....Let me know when you can receive PM and I will send you the links..

                Sendcards,

Thank you so much for the information.
After buying John Durham's report, I am trying to set up my own directory with DirectoryPress.

I have looked at many directories online but unfortunately I have yet to find one that looks lucrative for the owner. Most have only free listings, and a few at that.
I know that the key is to contact them and not wait for them to come to you. It is in my plan but I need to build it first, right?

How did you manage to get a good PR?

I would love to get the links to yours so that i can gain faith in the business model and inspire myself for the design. I already have answered most of the questions you wrote up top but I have a few that remain to be answered.

I cannot send PMs yet. Could you send me the links?

Just drop me a line : and I will shoot you a couple links ..

As for PR, good aged exact match domains are the starting point for me in the niches I enjoy working in and have a little knowledge of, plenty of good long tailed domains still out there . You need some links though and that is why older aged domains work for me especially if they have a few old links still resolving. But none of that is necessary, it just gives you a jump start.

I think a lot of folks feel you need a huge directory to make this work but I am working the other end of the room. Good directory scripts are available and easier than ever to set up and maintain. Just make sure you obtain one that has a massive support system in either a well used forum or great support staff or both... Then dive in knowing that you will be able to get almost any question answer about setting up, maintaining or customizing your directory because of the support system for that piece of software. With that technical hurdle out of the way, think hard about what you want to offer your prospects as listing value and build the directory towards that end. Everything should funnel to the outcome of a sale, even a free listing when a prospect won't get off a dime, his free listing should get him thinking about upgrading, so when you do call in a few months "just to follow up" he starts asking about things and ends up closing himself on a featured listing or better. Point I was going to attempt was when you know how to generate and manage multiple directories, size doesn't matter because there is always another market niche and more folks to call. You may build a niche directory and find out , like I have, that there are only a few hundred companies in that niche that would even have interest in buying a listing on such a directory, but when you know how to build and sell one directory the next one is even easier and most likely much better thought out.. When the gravy train runs out on one niche or when need be, you can just flip the switch on another directory at anytime and start another source of cash flow. It doesn't matter to me if a directory only has 20-30 or 100 paying customers out of several hundred or thousands of listings. Anyway you look at it you can have thousands of customers if you can make enough calls and run enough listings from a dozen good sites or one big niche if you can identify one . And then there are renewals......

Here is how you get faith in the business model, build a niche or local directory, spend time on it or hire a pro for the technical stuff , understand the value of your product assuming you have built value into it and get on the phone or start knocking on doors... You make 50 -100 sales presentations and just sell one and you have a gold mine...

                  Cheers,

                  Chris

That was, probably, a mistake: he didn't visit or post in this forum since June last year.

It is always a bad idea to dig up months-old threads: most of the time it is done by stupid spammers, who don't realize the new post would bump the thread to the top of the first page and attract unwanted attention from mods, which means they get deleted.

Your posts didn't get deleted but in the future try to avoid posting to old threads.
