      Good luck,
My first fishing website is going to be about freshwater, I know a lot more about it because there is not many places to fish saltwater here in Ontario Canada, but when i visit Florida every year i do really enjoy all the fish i catch there, so if it works well for the freshwater site, i will most likely move onto a saltwater site aswell.

always follow your passion. if you love something, there is a likely chance there are millions of other people who love it as well. and plus you will put more quality work into your site. You wont be spinning articles, but instead writing high quality content and will be able to connect with your visitors.

I say go for it. I hope you do well!

As you love it and you yourself having good knowledge about that you will able to put your own inputs in that. Rather than a totally unknown or research based niche it would be better you make something useful with your less efforts and more interest.

The keyword "freshwater fishing" is searched globally 110,00 time per month and locally 74,000 times per month with low competition. (Information from Google Adwords Keyword Tool)

If you know a lot about fishing and a little about SEO, I'd say go for it! Just research your keywords before you start SEOing the site. The keyword "freshwater fishing tackle" is only searched 1,000 per month locally with high competition, so be creative with your keywords.

Hi Billy. Those status for "Freshwater fishing" is for a broad search. The exact search is medium competition with 1,600 global monthly searches and 720 local. I generally won't go near keywords with medium competition. I wouldn't consider using a keyword with high competition. Way too hard to rank.

Google returns 9.1 million searches for freshwater fishing. That's a lot of competition to beat.

If I was thinking about doing a fishing site, I'd spend as much time as it took to find keywords with low competition and between 1,000-3,000 exact matches.

        Hello Mrs. Lori,

What site do you use to do your keyword research? I've been using the Google Adsense Keyword tool just because it's free, but I've had a feeling the stats were a bit off.

Think you'll find its not the tool but the settings you are using, for true results you need to untick broad search results and select exact result matches.. also the country selection varies the results so make sure you set this to your target market

back on track, freshwater fishing seems like a nice little niche with a few good keywords you could target and I have to agree that building a site on a topic you are interested will be a far better site than one built by someone else not so interested in the topic

          good luck

Hi Billy. I use the free keyword tool too. Like webpeon said, just check the "exact" box on the left side of the screen.

Good info Tim. I forgot there are professional fishermen.

I'd just make sure I spent as much time as necessary finding powerful keywords before getting started with the content.

          Good luck!

At the agency where I used to work, we represented a fishing line manufacturer, so I spent a good few years with the topic. The one thing I noticed was that I couldn't really support the community--this particular brand has a pretty strong fan base. These guys would talk about bass fishing in ways I could not even imagine. They sponsor 20-30 pros who do nothing but fish. There was no way that I could authentically represent the brand. I didn't know the lingo, I didn't have the answers.

Here's my takeaway: If you can talk the lingo and give good advice, you can build a fairly strong community around freshwater fishing. So, look at more than just a website, look at what you might be able to do with a community site.

    Good luck!

    Tim

Sounds like a good idea to me - the only thing would be is there any money in it?

You'd probably need to post every once in a while about the more expensive products like high-end rods (is that what you call them??) etc. because I'm guessing lures don't cost that much.

That would be something to bear in mind if you're going to affiliate product route. Good luck!

yes, fishing would be great. The issue is generating content. If you enjoy it, you can write about it. If you can write about it well, you can succeed. Good luck!

I think it would be a good idea. You could give fishing advice, what lures and bait are best at different times of the year and on what species of fish. Then you could get into all sorts of subjects, boats, motors, rod and reels, how to set out trot lines and drop lines and tons more. Maybe even write reviews for some of the companies. Adsense would work well on a site like that, just check the google keyword tool to see what would be the best keywords to use.

There is a fundamental process that needs to take place when you ask the question "is X a good topic". In the realm of the "Warrior Forum" this questions basically gets asked for 2 reasons. You have a passion for it, or you think it may be an opportunity to make money.

If you have a passion for it, you then need to look at the financial aspects of the market you are asking about. You basically need to ask "Is there a demand for products or services in this space?" In this instance "Fresh Water Fishing" I believe the answer to be yes.

To quickly go over the second reason to get into a market "Is there an opportunity to make money" You have to analyze and think about the content that will be needed. Is there ready available content to be had for the use of the project. If you are not so familiar with the topic is there material such as magazines etc that can be a continual resource of material. and again in this instance the answer is yes.

So back to having a Passion for a topic, and in particular "Fresh Water Fishing". I personally would not consider Fresh Water Fishing a "Niche" and actually that would be a personal preference of mine to start at this level vs a niche level. What is interesting here and something no one has mentioned "Fresh Water Fishing" in the realm of keywords on this particular topic would actually be the easy in. looking up "Bass Fishing" as an example and you see the potential in the marketplace.

So someone like myself that fishes, understands that you really don't have such an interest in "Fresh Water Fishing" as you do a more niche worthy topic such as "Bass Fishing" or whatever type of fish you like to catch.

Someone like myself also understands that the gear used to catch bass varies greatly to say the gear needed to catch West Virginia Golden Trout, or even something like Black Crappy.

Since you have an interest in "Fresh Water Fishing" that means you already have the gear. the investment that you need to look at with this endeavor would be a GoPro camera, and mount of some type to place in / on your boat. This type of content is what will separate you in the market place. As I stated above there are 2 people that get into this market space. those that have a passion for it ( that is YOU and you will have video proof ) and there are those that get in because of the financial opportunity.

I am going to more than bet you already get fishing mags. they are a great resource to getting Material. Just read an article or 3 on a subject and re write them in your own words. Another thing you will notice when reading these magazines is the amount of ink that "Products" get. Many an article and review can be written about the gadgets and tools that you prefer.

And getting started don't be afraid to take your trip down to Florida and share your killer adventure Bone Fish Fishing on your freshwater site. You and I both know that is what land locked "Fresh Water" fisherman dream of.

All I can say is GO FOR IT, and seriously... Best of Luck!
