Wordpress post left border not full-length

I've been designing with Wordpress for quiet some time now, but I've always noticed that with a lot of frameworks (including Thesis), the post's left border never extends the full length of the page if it is shorter than the sidebar. Is there any way to make the two borders (side bar border and post border) equal? I need a border going along the side of the content down the length of the page, but cannot find a way to go about doing it.

    A simple solution is to use a background in the main body area/div to create the desired background and/or border spanning the entire height.
