I've got two sites running on Hostgator and over the last few months, the public_html has been disabled a couple of times by their support:
I apologize, but I was forced to suspend the directory /public_html as multiple scripts inside were causing high loading issues on the server. Due to it affecting all of the other accounts on the system, we had to take immediate action for the health of the server.
This is on two of my sites with caching turned on and CDN network setup. Now, I had turned of caching briefly in order to do some design changes and I got this email within a few minutes. The site don't get crazy amounts of traffic but they do well and I can't afford the down time as it makes things look amateur.

What hosts are you guys using that have been successful? Should I move off of shared hosting and if so, is MediaTemple any good as I've been considering them. Suggestions appreciated, no affiliate links please.

There are plenty of other web hosts out there that provide quality environments. Were they able to tell you what the process was that was causing the spike?

what plugins are you using with your sites? (if they're Wordpress)

    any cron jobs running?

    sql intensive apps?

    Mike,

I would suggest that you don't have a Hostgator problem. You have a site or script problem. I would bet that most host would ding you for high server load on shared hosting.

Reading other members posts over the years, I believe that Hostgator is in the top-tier as far as hosting goes. There are several others.

    Just my opinion.

Have a look at your code, optimize it as much you can. If you have good traffic then you must look for a VPS. Don't risk your business.

shared hosting has its own limits, VPS is the next affordable and reliable solution for you.

If your site is growing fast or the CMS/back-end is resource hungry, you need VPS or dedicated server. Shared hosting allows you only a limited amount of hardware/server resource. You can't blame your web hosting company. You have outgrown the hosting package.

    Mike,
I've never had problems with Hostgator, and as another person mentions, they are one of the best. There's something else going on.

+1 to Hostgator. I would look to getting rid of the plugins causing the high load if its WP. Or else perhaps you need to upgrade to a VPS.

I have tried many hosts... but all have more major problems than Hostgator. I have even bought cheap hosting from WSO and tell you what... they were down 70% of the time. I just wrote those purchases off as loss and moved back to Hostgator the very first week. I've even tried VPS.net and found their support lacking. I would rather stick with Hostgator for their dedicated support than host elsewhere and wait 36 hours for support.

I also had Hostgator support help me majorly when a couple of my money sites were hacked. They had them cleaned and up and running in a couple of hours. Tried that with GoDaddy (a long time back) and it a week for their support to respond to me.

Hostgator has its issues but trust me at the of the day their issues are a lot easier to deal with than any other hosting I've used and I've used a fair bit having more than 60+ sites.
