Ebook Security Software: Do I Need it?

I'm about to launch an ebook but I'm concerned about security issues on the ebook checkout. My questions are:

1. Is this more trouble than its worth?

2. If not, what should I use to protect downloads?

3. Are there any free security softwares out there?

4. If you know, how do people actually get the ebooks?

Thanks very much.

If you're looking for download security, it's a little pricey but you can't go wrong with DLGuard. It integrates with most (if not all) of the major payment processors and gives each purchaser a unique, secure download link that's tied to their receipt number.

As far as security "after the download" that might be more trouble than it's worth. With a PDF file your only option is to give it a password and hope people don't share it. You could make it an EXE ebook, there are a few ebook compilers that have the option to require "registration" and give each user a unique activation code, but that can cause a lot of trouble for your users. You'd pretty much eliminate any non-Windows users and I imagine you'd have a pretty high refund rate.
