I am starting a blog and I need to get some pictures for my posts. I look on google.com/images but I don't know which pictures have copy writes on them and which don't. Is there a way to find out without having to ask each and every person who posted the pic?

Also, I know about stock photo sites with royalty free images which I will use if I have to. But for now I'm trying to see how to determine if a photo has a copy write on it or not.

One more thing. What sites do you all recommend for getting the images for your site/blog?

Thanks in advance.

On the search results page, click on the gear icon on the right near the top, and select "Advanced search." Scroll down to the "usage rights" setting and select "free to use or share, even commercially." These images can be used without having to ask anyone permission.

If you never intend to make any money from your blog, you can select the "free to use or share" option, which will give you more images to choose.

Flickr is another potential source. Again, you can find the images you're looking for by clicking the "Advanced Search" link to the right of the search bar. Scroll down the Creative Commons sections and check the boxes for "Only search within Creative Commons-licensed content" and "Find content to use commercially."

My blog uses a mix of these images as well as some from iStockPhoto. Credit the photographer using an image caption, or with some text at the end of the post. In some cases, crediting the photog has brought in extra traffic.

Another option would be to purchase them at istockphoto. How about making your own using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop? I have seen the silliest pictures get the most traffic.

Always assume that every image on the internet is protected by copyright. Period. And you can NOT use them.

So, no google images is NOT the right place to look for photos!
