Hello

Im at basic level here so any guidance you can provide would be appreciated. I apologise if the answer is really simple.

I download templates from dreamtemplate.com onto dreamweaver where i create the business websites offline putting all the content in and setting it all up.

I now need to connect my website to the internet and it says i need to add my FTP server. I have my username and password and its on port 21 but im unsure what my ftp address and the root directory is?

Ive been advised that File Zilla is a good way to upload the templates onto the internet, is File Zilla easier then using FTP on dreamweaver? Do i download file zilla client or file zilla server?

Im so close as ive done all the work on the templates but its just getting the website live on the internet, im getting myself into a pickle.:confused:

Yes, Filezilla is the easiest and widely used FTP client.Just save your files - login using your FTP credentials and upload files in seconds.

thank you for your comment. With my FTP credentials do you mean just my ftp username and password for the template?

Hey mate, here's a quick video on how to use filezilla,
You can find lots of tutorials at youtube. It's super easy once you get the hang of it.

If you're using Dreamweaver, then you can upload your
template files via Dreamweaver itself, rather than relying
on an external FTP program like FileZilla, etc.

You need to provide us with more information like what
version of Dreamweaver you are using and where the
      site is hosted.

You first need to set-up a site within Dreamweaver and
supply the FTP details for your hosting account and select
a folder on your computer to use for your files.

Usually, you connect to your server using Dreamweaver,
then 'Get' the files from the server (especially those in
      the public_html file).

The index.html or index.php will usually be your homepage,
then you can edit that with the template you unzip.

Once you've got your page looking the way you want it
on your computer then you just need to 'Put' the page
on the web using Dreamweaver to FTP it to your server.

        Thank you

ive got the dreamweaver cs5 version.

My hosting package is under my friends account. I bought the domains and he connected them to the templates.

I used dreamweaver cs5 to write on the template thats currently uploaded. My friend has only given me the ftp username and password and hes away on holiday. I wasn't sure if there was a default or i need more details to log in. I think the hosting he uses is called fatcow, name server ns1.fatcow.com but im not 100%

My current situation is i have two templates that ive put content on. One website is live and the other isnt. The director of the company im doing the websites for would like to change the templates to two new ones hes chosen from dreamweaver. The content isnt a lot so i dont mind changing them over, im just stuck how to get the template zip file onto dreamweaver? If someone can advise step by step on what i need to click and then when ive got the new template uploaded onto dreamweaver i can edit it then upload it onto the internet. Also how to upload.

Sorry for so many questions im new to connecting everything

the ftp address is the IP address of where your website is going to be hosted.. depending on who and how the website is setup you can often just use your domain name instead of the IP address

How did you get FTP username & password? On your hosting cpanel when create new FTP account you should get all FTP details such as address, username & password also your site directory. Mostly the default directory named with "public_html", Run your Filezilla FTP client to upload all site files to 'public_html'

Host is the one you want. But whichever FTP client you use Dreamweaver, File Zilla, or my favorite, Cute FTP. I used to just use Internet Explorer but Microsoft has changed it up so it's not as easy and straight forward as it used to be.
typically the ftp address of your site is ftp://www.yourdomain.com and when you are asked to login you give your username and password. On an Apache server you are going to want to put your files in the folder "public-html"

OK I just looked up using Internet Explorer for FTP. Just type this in the address bar ...

        ftp://yourusername.password@yourdomain.com

Yep works great Gives you a familiar interface to work with. Simply open another copy of Windows Explorer and then drag and drop between windows.

This used to be the way I always did any FTP transfers. Until I went and got Cute FTP

Use filezilla client and when you login use this:
    Host: your domain name (example.com)
User: username provided by your friend
Password: pass provided by your friend

Probably you'll need to click on your domain mane foldee and then just upload everything there or if there is a "public_html" folder then upload your files there.
