I want to create a custom homepage for my website but don't exactly know where to start. What should be on a great homepage? Examples?

It is hard to say what should be on your homepage because I have no idea what your website is about.

Simplicity is the best style for a homepage. Too many images will be a distraction and the same goes for text. You want it to be easy to read and navigate.

"Streamlined" is the best word to describe what a great homepage would look like.

That's the whole thing, my website is about many things (it's the site in my signature). making money, saving money, home business idea, etc. I think that is what makes creating a custom homepage so difficult for this site.

I'm no expert on what a great homepage should look like. I do know what I don't like though.

I stall when I hit a page that's so busy - I can't figure out where I am or where I need to go. Often I hit pages that look like magpie nests - full of shiny objects that someone's bought and is now trying to sell. It comes across as disorganised and desperate. It doesn't generate a sense of professionalism or give a feeling of confidence in the support available if needed.

I also bin a site the moment it throws any uninvited pop-up at me. That's just rude.

Fine, if I click something and get a pop-up - that's to be expected.

I notice there doesn't appear to be any form of common etiquette when it comes to treating visitors to websites.

My sites homepage is just too much information without any real order. Latest posts, and the sidebar. I think it can be overwhelming to visitors.

      From user point of view-
It all depends on the purpose of the page (news, blog, store etc). Main content needs to be front and center and visible. I hate when ads take the place of the main content. No scrolling for the main page if possible.
And the most important thing - the page should have a purpose and it should be clear what that purpose is for a user.
Usually, simple navigation, "clean" professional look and quality content make the best impression.

I really dont get what you mean by a custom home page. The website should be built around the home page design. so it depends on what your website is about.

Wrong question... There are millions of "homepages" that look great - because they show exactly what the owners wanted to show

Your problem is: you are using a theme that might be not adequate for your goals.

In other words - you don't have a "homepage issue". You have a wrongly selected theme issue

Istavan is right, maybe you should ask your self what design good for your clients or target user on your website.

It depends on your Niche and what you want to delever to your clients/vistor from your site..

I personally prefer... content above the fold and a slider at the right...

    Thanks

Basically most users look for in a homepage aside from it looking attractive, it should be easy to navigate, the purpose of the page should be evident, there should always he something new and exciting that will keep the user coming back or even referring your site to others. Well a good homepage is one that will encourage the user to explore more pages and keep them coming back for more.
