lynda.com and w3schools.com are the best places to learn it.

And setting up the localhost is the best way to practice it.
Let me know if you are unaware about setting up localhost.

Another really good method is to install Microsoft's Visual Web Developer Which is A WYSIWYG editor very much like Dreamweaver except that it' a whole lot better than Dreamweaver And it produces very clean code even when you use the drag & drop features in the "Design" mode Though you will soon find that you are using almost exclusively "code" view. however the ability to build pages in "design " mode and then tweak the code in "code" view greatly facilitates learning HTML and CSS. Like I said you will quickly find that you are working almost exclusively in "code" view. After you start messing around with your editing software go find some tutorials on the web that show how to do stuff. and practice building those things. In the process you will find that you are learning how to build web pages. There are lots of tutorial sites on the web this is one I have used often HTML Tutorial - Introduction For instance whenever I get stumped on something or something isn't working the way I expect it to work I've found this site useful mostly because I've used it before and am familiar with it.

W3schools can be a good place to start, but keep in mind, some of what they teach is incorrect (source: w3fools.com).

Youtube is also an excellent place. Just search for "html tutorials".

Then there's also Tizag: tizag.com/htmlT/ <-- this is the best place to start, in my opinion.

I would not recommend Lynda as it will break your wallet and you can accomplish the same thing for free (learning web design).

Learn HTML first, and once you're comfortable with that, move on to CSS. Both are pretty easy and you should be a master in no time!

For "web design" specifically, Photoshop (or Gimp as a free alternative) would be a great (perhaps even necessary) software to master.

Whoah... I'm going to stop recommending w3schools, and remove it from my bookmarks as a reference! I go to it very rarely anyway, but now I see it's useless.

I was also shocked when I found this out. I used to use it ALL the time. It's ridiculous how a site spreading incorrect information can be such an authority in the field.

OK I am curious. Why do you say this? Frankly i never really went there very much simply because teh way it was organized made it difficult to find what I was usually looking for i.e. step by step examples in my early days of learning html /CSS i really needed to see it implemented and put into action in order t understand it and typically most tutorials on the web just assumed too much basic understanding on my part. So I would scour the web looking for tutorials that gave simple straight forward instructions that even the most dim witted moron (me) could follow. Of course now days we have Youtube. And another free source which oddly enough is very good for learning HTML / CSS even though their main goal is to teach ASP and that is ASP.NET Their tutorials section is unbelievable it's a massively huge free library of video tutorial on ASP and web application. It will teach you all there is to know about very high end websites. Literally hundreds of hours of video all free.

I checked it out, and sure enough there is quite a bit of misinformation on w3schools.

My journey of learning web design is much like yours, actually. So even though I never relied on one specific source, w3schools was one of the few that I bookmarked as "reliable". But now I know the difference, thanks to crayzrocker.
