maybe read a few books about website design? I have friends that did that and they are pretty good now, like creating templates in photoshop and then making the css for the website from it.

Have a look at w3schools, they've got some pretty indepth tutorials on there on learning basic HTML. After that progress onto some CSS and another really good website is codecademy as you can learn jQuery and Javascript on it. That's pretty much how I learned and I wouldn't say that I was too bad with it, so just keep at it and you'll learn

What are the problems ?? In terms of learning, web design is a practiced medium, keep making sites and you will get better.

one simple way to learn a lot, and apparently you already did it...is to draw a custom layout (something a bit challenging) and then make that to a fully functional wordpress website...by the time you're finished you know the wordpress platform inside out and surely learned 100 new things in CSS/HTML

one example source to get started

I agree with other comments above, practice more perhaps something a bit challenging. You can also start some tutorials where you can learn more. If you have a practice site, why not create different pages for different types of site this way you can analyze your strengths and weaknesses... Or better yet if you can afford it attend some advanced schooling for web designers or apply for apprenticeship.

The trouble is, more and more people are using Wordpress where HTML etc are becoming less and less important. Even the ready availability of millions of themes makes artistic design skill somewhat redundant. Sure there are some areas where specialist skills are necessary. My advice would be to thoroughly bone up on Wordpress then market your skills to local businesses who don't have a clue about any of this...

For me personally, my rise to a successful web design career (starting in 1999) was powered by search engines. Anything and everything I learned about web designing came from the likes of Alta Vista, Looksmart, Lycos, Infoseek, Netscape and others of the time. Google was almost unheard of back then. In fact I never heard of it until a year later, and it wasn't nearly as huge and all-encompassing as it is now. Even Yahoo was bigger than Google at the time.

Today, there is more information on web design techniques than you could ever go through in a lifetime. That's both a good thing and bad thing. Information overload, yet you'll never be without information. So, if you're having problems in certain areas, it's faster and more helpful to yourself for you to actually "Google it" than to request help in forums. Unless.... you just can't find an answer anywhere in your searches. Then you can confidently ask for help in a forum, because it would be something unique; not to mention helpful for future searchers.

Begin by telling us what the problem is that you are facing. I'm not sure how anyone can answer your question without knowing the specific problem you are facing.

Start with learning how to use a CMS, and install themes. And then download firebug lite for your browser, and look in the theme code to see how HTML5 works with CSS3.

Once you understand how the structure works, then pick up some books on HTML5 > CSS3 (they explain the languages well). Once you understand those two languages and how they work together, you can move on to learning databases (MySQL) and then PHP and Javascript/Jquery.

Ive nearly 14 years experience as a web designer, and the majority of what i know is self taught despite completing a course in higher education. There is no substitute for practice. Just build loads of sites and practice as much as time allows. Understand the problems you face when building the sites by researching solutions on the internet. Take in what you've learnt and rinse and repeat. Its a hard industry if your sites aren't up to scratch, so make sure everything you produce stands out as the competition in this niche is fierce. The process i go through to create a site is to sketch it out on paper first that relates to the brief or idea. Then i use Fireworks to create a layout of the design to the exact pixel so I know what im going to build. I'll use Photoshop and Illustrator to create the graphics and then i code it all by hand in TextMate on a MAC.

Everyone has a different method, but dont just start using Dreamweaver and expect to be a web designer, you need to understand how to code by hand to learn the languages properly, that way you will understand any errors you encounter. Also test each design on every browser such as Chrome, IE 7, 8, 9, 10, Firefox, Opera etc. Make sure you don't ignore mobile phones and tablets either as the amount of devices that can show a webpage is increasing, and read about the latest tricks and trends to keep you in the loop. The most important languages to learn for modern web design are HTML, CSS and perhaps jQuery. Best of luck.

A "Web Designer" is defined by the industry as having expert (or really good knowledge) of three main areas:
      1. HTML
      2.CSS (Cascading Style Sheets)
      3. Javascript

adding PHP, jQuery, AJAX, etc, is pushing toward more of a programmer or "Web Developer"

The best way to develop the basics is to utilize any tutorials you can find
      (Especially w3schools)
      and practice.
WYSIWYG editors can hinder the growth of your skills, but can be a boon when you're starting out.
I suggest that when you start to know what the elements are, you start using a text editor.

Another way to master these skills is to copy a page in the "View Source" pane and fiddle with the parts to help demonstrate what each element is, and what is affected.
