I'm a total noob with internet and websites but decided to jump in a few weeks ago. I've been trying a few free wordpress themes and none even look decent...

If you'll search you can find a lot of great FREE Wordpress themes. Most of the premium companies offer free themes. for Example, Woo Themes offers a lot of themes which are totally free: Free | WooThemes

I used free themes for a long time and I found many that were very nice looking and very functional. Try searching for "Best free wordpress themes" and you will find posts with like 100 screenshots of free themes to choose from.

Remember that Wordpress is super-customization so if it's not exactly what you want, chances are with a bit of work you could edit to to make it what you want.

That said, I would recommend buying a theme, even for a beginner (as well as hosting and a proper domain name).. If you are serious about your site you don't have to be afraid of spending money on it.. Starting a normal business (renting a shop, buying stock, hiring people) costs waaaaay more so you're not putting alot on the line compared to that.

The primary advantage of going with a premium theme, especially when you are new to this, is support. Make sure to get a theme that has robust and timely support. What's your time worth? This is the great equalizer between free vs paid themes.

I've thought of that actually. The only thing holding me back is my lack of confidence with the current site that i am trying to create.
