GIMP, Photoshop, or Fireworks

It's time I started learning image editing/creating. GIMP, is of course free. My question is there any distinct advantage of learning Photoshop or Fireworks over GIMP, besides that it takes a bigger bite out of my wallet?

The #1 advantage to Photoshop is that it usually comes as part of a suite Personally I'd go with the web package If you get the academic version you can get it at a pretty manageable price and it will come with everything else like Illustrator Flash and Dreamweaver all of your essential web development applications. If you know a student or a teacher you can get the academic version. I'd maybe use GIMP while I worked out how to get the money for Adobe Creative Suite 6 Design & Web Premium $395 from Academic Superstore.

Actually I have a CS3 version of Photoshop and I'm using a guide to learn it. I wonder if the current version of GIMP would still be better than a version of Photoshop that is a couple of years old.

I have versions of Photoshop going back to Photoshop 4.0 and frankly there just aren'y that many big new differences Just off hand I'd say one of the biggest differences is the expansio0n of the filters Bottom line is the basic functionality that has always been at the core of Photoshop hasn't really changed at all It's all about how Photoshop handles and manipulates pixels.

I think one of the biggest things I noticed was that filter makers like Alien Skin kind of got hijacked by Adobe They pulled a Mirosoft on them.

Honestly I could go back to PS 7 and never miss a step
. If there were any problem it would be with online tutorials because the steps and dialogue boxes /pallets might not match.

My .02 cents -- Gimp is no comparison to photoshop.

I'd say that whatever you get used to first will be your favorite.

If you already own a copy of PS I'd go with that. The advantage is
the integration with other Adobe software... even if you don't have
any plans on using that now it may be useful later. Also it is industry
standard and you will find a plethora of tutorials and add-ons for just
    about any taste imaginable.
IMHO it doesn't make much of a difference that the version you own
    is a little older.

I prefer Photoshop than other because it have a lot of tool to edit and create you graphic although it have a cost but I think it a best investment for best graphic. that is my opinion.

Or if you not prefer photoshop. May I suggest photoscape , I think it's a second choice that you must try it.

    have a nice day.

yes, Photoshop is better than GIMP, but often times GIMP is just "good enough", and it gets the job done. So it depends on what you want to do, in the end. If you're on a budget, then GIMP will be all you need, so you can waste that money on other stuff. So I'd go for the free, then move to my purse only if the free stuff doesn't do the job I want: in this case, who is better that whom is irrelevant. A Lamborghini is better than a Mazda, yet the Mazda does the job of bringing me from A to B just fine ("good enough") ... and I save some $300k in the process ... so which is better again?
... depends on your wallet, and personal tastes
