So I am teaching myself to build WP websites. I have a Hostgator webhosting account and domains from NameCheap. I've read you shouldn't use the same company for both.

I am trying to transfer the DNS from Namecheap to Hostgator, but I just learned that there is a 60 day wait on transferring new domains.

What do you do, violate the rule of thumb and buy the domain at Hostgator as well? I don't really want to try NameCheap web hosting as I can't find much information about their reliability.

DOmain transfer is different from DNS change. Just Change your DNS to Hostagators. Namecheap hosting is a good one too.

I definitely agree that you shouldn't use the same company to buy your domain and host your account.

For changing the DNS server, here's how to, directly from Hostgator: How to Point my Domain to HostGator when Using DNS Elsewhere « HostGator.com Support Portal

And as the poster above said, what you're trying to do is NOT considered a domain transfer (you're just "pointing" your domain to the hosting account).

As you already figured it out: learning the proper terminology is essential if you don't want to screw up your things...

You do NOT transfer anything in this case:
    1. Namecheap is your domain registrar
    2. Hostgator is your host

What you need to do: login to your account at the registrar and change/modify the DNS info; i.e. change the DNS (domain name server) from what namecheap puts there automatically to what Hostgator gave you when signing up for hosting with them.

    Namecheap > Login
My account > Domains > Manage domains
(on the left click) Domain Name Server Setup

Next, in the fields put whatever hostgator gave you as
    dns1 and dns2 (or ns1 and ns2)

    Save. Done.
