How Big Do You Make Your Sites?

I'm relatively new to web design and one of the biggest problems I face is what size to start my site?

They way I got about is I start with a blank photoshop document that is about 1500x800. I have about 200 or so cut in on each side and marked with a guide line. I do the majority of my layout in this area, and use the outer edges to model my background. The site in my sig is an example of a site I did using this method.

I'm always looking to get better, so what approaches do you take when designing a site?

    i like my sites and themes at 960px wide

    you can use grids to design sites, take a look at 960 Grid System they have photoshop actions to make the grids for your design, and you can code the design using their css framework

      If you're designing a website with a fixed-width, a good rule of thumb is not to go any wider than 1000px, because a fair amount of people still use monitors that have a pixel width of 1024 (so 1000px leaves just enough room for a vertical scrollbar).

    hi,
    Design should not include more images and banner, whole size of the site should be below 1 KB in size. Do not use more flash banners to attract users.

    960px is a good guideline if you must choose a fixed width. The site in your signature will have a huge horizontal scrollbar on many common screen sizes.
