The (very) small start-up I work at has just released its first build. We are planning on implement social sharing features and user event submissions in the future, but I would love to get some initial feedback regarding the color/font scheme, layout, functionality, etc. Any and all input is greatly appreciated, and don't be afraid to be brutal. Thanks in advance!

  • Ronniemexico,

Very innovative idea and the layout is pretty attractive (reminiscent of Pinterest). A few things I noticed when trying to think of the site from a user’s point of view. First (and this is something that even major players overlook), I didn’t really know what the site was all about when I got there. Having some copy in a prominent area would help first time visitors understand what the purpose of the website is. I saw the about us link at the bottom of the page yet is kind of ambiguous.

Another thing I noticed was that the site takes an incredibly long time to load. I ran the site through a speed test. First view was 10 seconds and repeat view was 14. I noticed that you have several js documents. If at all possible, try combining these into as few documents as possible so that there are fewer http requests. Also, serve scaled images on your pages. Since the design is so image intensive, this will probably make the site a lot faster.

Lastly, the images with dates appear to be clickable however you cannot click on them for more information. It would be great if you could click on these and get detailed information about events.

Other than those things the site looks great.

I highly recommend this book on website usability, its an eye opener,

Layout and functionality are fine. Perhaps a lighter background would give the foreground elements more "pop".

The site does appear to be responsive to mobile devices, which is a definite plus for your market.

One thing you probably want to work on is site speed. The site registers a Google pagespeed score of 68/100

I'd suggest you work to get that score up to at least 85. Try running the images through an optimizer like Yahoo Smush.it or similar. That should help.
