Hello gang, I am just starting to get my website going, but my computer will not connect to my IP's ftp server. I was advised to download an FTP program, which I did, and login from there. I am STILL not getting a connection. Please help, as I'm running outta hair to pull out over here. ![]() Thanks. Dawn |

Could you post the error make sure you have the correct domain ie ftp.domain.com or domain.com and recheck you username & password Also if you have a firewall, ie norton, zonealarm turn them off to see it they are the issue for a free ftp program try filezilla |

Here's the error I get when I put the ftp. in front of the...server name? Error 11004 (Valid name, no data record of requested type) finding address for host Here's what I get when I don't put the ftp. in front and when I also turn off my firewall: Connecting to members.cavtel.net port 21 Connected, waiting for response... Server closed control connection. HTH Thanks |

They have a FAQ Frequently Asked Questions not much help i would guess the ftp address would be members.cavtel.net or cavtel.net as your not even getting connected to the server. try both see if you get a different error message this might help Cavalier will not answer a simple question - dslreports.com |

According to CavTel it is members.cavtel.net, but that doesn't connect from IE, DOS, or from the ftp software that I downloaded. And believe me, I am WELL aware of their crappy service.

Hi, I've had a look round and the only suggestion I can find is replace the server name with the actual IP address. Quicksilver The HTML Book, with free HTML code. |

I'm sure you've checked this - but is the domain pointed to the host server and has it had time to propagate? Coreftp lite is a good free ftp program that's esy to figure out and use. kay |

See that's where I'm a bit confused. I purchased my domain from yahoo, but I am trying to get the webspace from my IP. I did go into my yahoo account and added my IP's information and kept yahoo's in the top two spots. Am I suppose to use yahoo's information? If so, I never received any login information from them. Thanks Dawn |

Well buying a domain doesn't give you website, i take it your going to point your domain to your free webspace. If so you need to use your login for cavtel. maybe you have a dsl or dialup username? maybe email them or call them to get the login info |

I know that buying the domain doesn't give me a website. That's what I'm trying to get from CavTel. Now the guy I talked to yesterday gave me a different login than what I use to get my email. I was using the new login. I will go and see if my regular login works. Thanks Dawn |

Well, that didn't work either. Man I wis this company where I'm getting these products from would of given me my own sales website. I hate dealing with things I have very little knowledge about. Guess I'm back on the phone with CavTel and another 30-40 minute hold time. ![]() Dawn |

Well, I talked to another guy at CavTel and he suggested I use angelfire since I'm having problems right now and need to get my site up. The problem I have with that is...it gave me a totally different website addy then the one I purchased with yahoo. OMG!!! PLEEEEEEEZ tell me that I can redirect this angelfire to the yahoo website. I'm beginning to think that I'm going to be biting off more than I can chew here. ![]() Dawn P.S. What' this trackback thingy below the message box? |

Don't know if it is too late but it would be a lot cheaper and simpler if you just went to GoDaddy.com and bought your domains and webspace. You would already be up and running. I have a reseller account at www.pdmws.com (you would be buying straight from GoDaddy, not me.)

I already purchased my domain name from Yahoo the other day. Maybe next year, when yahoo raises the price on me, I'll go with GoDaddy. Thanks though.Dawn |

try this: Start Menu> Run> services.msc Scroll down to see your ftp server name right click on it, and activate. (hope it works, and helps). It did for me. Also check if your ip and dns addresses are correct in your connection. |

Thanks nvs, but that didn't work either. I don't think it's really going to matter now because I am SO lost on how to get this site set up anyway. I need to go through all these ebooks I have and figure out how to get the images where they belong on my templates. As I said before, I now KNOW that I am biting off more than I can chew at this time. Dawn |

If you want free hosting choose to host your website on your pc. All you need is a web server software: Free version: Apache. This is easy to install and configure. You will be hosting your website in no time. Next thing to do is to check if your webserver can be visited from another country for example. Simply go to hidemyass.com and type your ip, not your domain name but your ip. If this works you can proceed with setting up the domain redirection. If this doesn't then you probably need to configure port forwarding settings in your router or talk to your isp about forwarding port 80 http traffic back to you. Once this is solved you can redirect the domain to your ip. If your ip changes all the time don't worry get a special software that will update this on the web so that the domain will always point at your ip. Enjoy free hosting for the rest of your life. Btw: for this you will need to keep your pc open 24/24 so this may not be so practical for many ppl. But it works for me. Hope it also works for you! |
