WP - Re posting an Image With the Same URL

In WordPress,
Some times I wish to edit an image. These images have been picked up and hot linked to other sites, so after I touch up and modify images down the track, I need to be able to re post that image to the exact same URL.

It seems to put a number 2 after the file name (when I use the same file name)
How do I make it exactly the same URL I wonder?

If you want to upload it via the wp-admin subpanel - you can NOT.

If you want to keep all the references the same, you will have to upload the new image - with the exactly same file names - via FTP.

Also, don't forget, when you upload an image via the admin panel, it creates several versions of it: besides having the full size original uploaded as imagefilename.jpg, it also creates thumb, medium and large sized images (according to your settings in Settings > Media) named like imagefilename-150x150.jpg etc...

If you want full functionality, you MUST create those image variants on your computer with the same name and size and properties and upload all of them via FTP to your server into the
wp-content/uploads/2012/11/ folder.

  The reason why you got underscore+variable is because that the old file is still in your folder resulting to give you a different filename_number.extension... You can still use the media upload but make sure to delete the old file first before reuploading.
