Any suggestions on best plugin to move wordpress from one domain to another without having to get into the backend messy stuff? I think I am being overcharged by the person who does it for me so I want to try and do it myself. Thank you.

It is not messy, if you know what you are doing...

Are you OK with FTP and the occasional editing in phpMyadmin? If yes, you don't need plugins.

(Others may know about such plugins, I never use them)

Just out of curiousity: how much do they charge you?

I'm comfortable using FTP. phpMyadmin is where I get intimidated. I searched for tutorials on how to do it but can't find one that is really clear to a point I would be comfortable doing it myself. I've been paying hourly and I get charged quite a few hours but from research I think a transfer to should be relatively quick and not take a few hours?

Many hours for a site transfer...?

I will describe you below the exact steps one should take when moving a WP site from one domain to another. The operation itself shouldn't take much longer time than the time needed for typing this info:

    1. cPanel > phpMyadmin: select the WP related database on the left > click Export on the top: save it as a file (.sql)

    2. FTP > connect and download all the files and folders of your WP

    3. On the new domain (new host?) create a new empty database (in cPanel, you have the wizard) - REMEMBER the DB name, DB user, DB password

    4. In a plain text editor edit the wp-config.php file with the new database info

    5. Upload all the WP files and folders

    6. on the new domain's phpMyadmin > go to the empty DB: Import > select the previously saved backup (.sql) file

    IMPORTANT:
7a. In the wp_options table find the "siteurl" row (usually #1) and edit: enter the new domain for value - http is a must; slash after it NEVER!
7b. in the same table find the "home" raw (around #30 or 40-something) - do as above

    8. You8 should be able to see your WP powered site at the new domain and to log in...

    Optional:
Find the Search and Replace plugin > install it.
Use it to find and replace in the database all the references to the old domain with the new one - this will help to avoid any issues with uploaded media (images, videos, pdf etc.).
Remember: every "attachment" i.e. uploaded file, like images for your posts are referenced in the database with their full path -
    Code:
http://example.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/gumenol.jpg (for a file uploaded today)
. When the site is moved to a new domain (let's say "icecreamtruck.com") ALL the references in the database MUST be changed in every path >
    Code:
    http://icecreamtruck.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/gumenol.jpg

Hi, is this still the same method when you are not changing hosts? and are simply changing domain names?

      Thanks

A basic WordPress installation transfer requires not more than 1 hour however if the site has many images then it may take more than 1 hour because links to images in media library also needs to be updated.

I agree with Peter Sundstrom, this plugin is very easy to use without fuss.

Simply install the plugin and follow simple steps, this plugin even works if you need to move the site to another hosting company or maybe duplicate similar site with different domain name.

If your person is charging by the hour for this work. Well you need someone else as you "go to" person. 15 minutes or less to do it

Give me a yell if you need help with getting this done.

I personally use " duplicator" or " backup wordpress" to move my site with database. These are free and work.

I have tried several plugin "solutions" to move blogs and have always had problems of one sort or another. One of them completely hosed my install (luckily I'd already made a manual backup.)

Doing it manually is for me the best way. Once you've done it a few times it all goes a bit easier.

If the blog has a lot of content (especially large images) then 2-3 hours is not uncommon for file transfer. Of course it also depends on your connection speed.

I use Duplicator and it has never failed me... Found on wordpress site

But I must say Istvan your instructions do make it all sound easy, I will still use Duplicator as it is just as simple.. But I use a particular security setup which means I cannot duplicate a blog for a different domain name, if I backup its always for the same domain as wp just crashes, so every new blog is always setup from scratch so its many hours of wasted time, but you have now given me an idea of something to look at, it may resolve my problems.. thanks

Take a look Robert Plank's backup plugin in WSO. I have been using it since day one and it working great and he is one of the better software providers on here (he does not abandoned his work)
