For "Web development", Adobe Photoshop is not necessarily the tool you need to master initially. I love Photoshop and have used it since version 1.0, however, I use it much more for print work and large format designs (tradeshow graphics, etc) than for web graphics and design. Basically, anything that needs higher resolution, such as 150-300 dpi print graphics, Photoshop is *the* tool.

For "Web Design", I'd say photoshop is a great tool to learn, perhaps the best, however, if you are not a natural designer, photoshop is not going to be of much help, and the learning curve is pretty steep, so you risk discouragement before you get the skills down.

If you truly are interested in becoming a web developer, the number 1 technology you should learn about, by far, is Cascading Stylesheets (aka CSS).

Learning to code CSS by hand is your best asset as a web developer. With the latest css techniques, you can do lots of things without ever thinking about photoshop. What's more, your sites will be much faster, leaner and provide a better user experience when they are built from sound CSS design from the beginning.

For either of these, CSS or Photoshop (or any other web based training for that matter), I'd recommend, as the gold standard, any course at lynda.com

For free alternatives to lynda.com, I'd recommend:

    nettuts.com, CodeAcademy.com and w3schools.com

PS: Once you learn CSS, before you consider diving into Photoshop, besides being very expensive (even if you can get it at student discount pricing), its learning curve is steep and its overkill for simple web graphics. Consider the free online alternative, pixlr.com.

What makes Pixlr a very compelling alternative to Photoshop is that its geared specifically for creating web graphics, its free and you can get up to speed very quickly with free web based tutorials. Check this post I created here on WF for more on this incredible tool.

What's more, the interface is based on Photoshop, so once you learn it, you'll have a nice head start once you decide you want to learn Photoshop.

good advice from the users here... you will in fact need to learn photoshop and a CMS web design system. I use Joomla for my CMS, but more people use Wordpress here. so you're prolly better off learning wordpress CMS. I use photoshop to create custom buttons and banners etc.. (with photoshop, it might be a good idea to learn what you need when you need it.. for example, if a client wants a banner to look like a some other pic he showed you, you can just google or youtube how to do it spacific to that type of design.. learn it and implement it.. )

If i were you i would pay 24 bucks a month at lynda.com ----> Software training online-tutorials for Adobe, Microsoft, Apple & more (tutorial place) and learn what you need and then cancel your subscription.

otherwise you can do what i did and that was go to this site , then that one and learn this little trick and then learn that one until you master them all... or you can just go to Lynda.com and learn it in one little bundle.

I know 0 (zero) coding and very little css and yet make tons of money at web design (learn a CMS system and develop a picky eye!) if you need a coder (i rarely do, just hire one and make the client pay a little extra) as far as CSS, firebug (Firefox plugin) solves that issue and learning very little goes a long way and is super easy. Learn a CMS, i can't stress is enough - Joomla, wordpress, drupal are your top CMS systems.

      have fun! and good luck.

here is a design i did using a joomla template and changing the css and using photoshop for images and background etc.. ( i changed the logo so no one knows the real location) don't need the spam!
