Hello all,

I'm not thinking about creating a clone of such websites, I'm sure there are many already that have failed, but I was thinking about ideas that could use such interface.

Since I'm a beginner when it comes to web development (I know basic HTML and CSS coding, but that's about it) I highly doubt that I'll be able to create such website on my own anytime soon, so would appreciate it if anyone with information or experience about such stuff could answer a few questions:

1- What kind of languages are involved with such websites? e.g php, java, html, mysql..etc

2- What kind of security measures do they take?

3- Estimated cost to get such website entirely professionally built including everything like user interface, tracking & payment system, management system..etc (please exclude any promotion or marketing related fees).

4- Once a website gets as active as these, how much are the running costs? e.g webhosting fees (I only ever used shared webhosting and I know that won't cut it here lol), security..etc

I obviously am not looking for exact figures here, just estimates guys.

Any help would be appreciated!

Because the vast majority of the visitors in this forum are NOT web developers, not even web designers, just users like yourself and have no idea about the issues you were asking.

Which leads me to my own question: since you are not planning to make such sites, and since you don't have the necessary programming knowledge to even think about such sites... why this thread?

1- I mentioned in my post that even though I don't want to create a site similar to those, I do have some ideas that could use a similar interface, which is why I needed to know these info.

2- Even though I don't have the right knowledge to do it now, I might be able to in the future if it turns out that it's not as complicated as I think it is. I'd hire someone to create it for me if I wanted to do it now.

3- There are freelancer web designers on this forum who seem to be very knowledgeable about creating websites, those are who I expected to get a reply from, which is why I posted in this particular forum instead of general IM section.

          Hello,

Here is some basic and quick information for you.

          1) You could create a similar site using php, mysql, JavaScript, JQuery, HTML, CSS. Most off the shelf software like this uses these core languages. There are many vendors that sell similar solutions and systems that you can customize.

          2) Your site would need to be very secure with encryption for sensitive information, etc. You would also want things like Captchas to avoid spam.

          3) It depends on your final requirements and what sub systems you need. I suspect you would receive a wide range of bids from freelancers from $1,500 to $10,000 and it depends on your requirements and how complex you want phase 1 to be. Can you do without a CMS? Do you need all the search filters and pages? Do you want buyer wants? Do you need Facebook login? All these pieces will add to your quote. A popular and similar site sold on Flippa recently for $20,400.

          Check out the details here:

A high portion of the selling price I'm sure was related to brand, users, traffic, ranking, etc.

          4. You could start with shared hosting and then upgrade as your traffic increases and performance degrades. You should be fine for sometime on a shared hosting account and if you go for the gold package to start you're burning money. Grow with your needs.

Most sites like this fail, mainly, due to the fierce competition and high price of marketing and user acquisition.

Hope this helps. All the best.

That was incredibly helpful, thanks a lot!!

I'm gonna have to research some more about security and the ready systems that you mentioned that I can use for what I want (even if it's partially).
