Is ping plugin still needed in wordpress

Hi, I updated my blog to the newest version today, and my cbnet ping optimizer plugin says it is no longer needed. I did a little research, and found several people saying that a plugin to protect my site from multiple pinging, when doing updates to the content, is not needed, because wordpress already handles it.

I also found this link, which seems to confirm this.

I would like to get some advice before I delete this plugin from all my sites.

    No, it is not needed. Wordpress prevents ping spamming - if it didn't, would be a second rate CM.

    I used the Pingler plugin, but after reading Chip Bennett's comments I have never used pinging software. I have seen no difference with or without.
