How Hard To Change A Theme From 2 Column To 1 Column?

I've been using the same theme for a while now (on many different sites), and I like the theme, but having 2 columns is limiting me from making sites the way I want to.

The problem is, I don't want to use a different theme.

It took me a few months to learn how to change code in the theme and switching to a different theme will slow me down. Because I'll have to find out where everything is in the coding all over again.

My question is this, this is my site:

MMRG, Mold Remediation & Basement Waterproofing in NJ-

I want the site to have a layout somewhat like this site:

Mold Removal Services in New Jersey NJ

So how can I achieve this? Is there some basic way to change the site from 2 column to 1 column? Then I'm thinking for the top, I can just use a 2 column table for the slider and form.

I hate my sites layout because the side bar takes up too much space, and I can't make my site flow the way I want it to. But new themes are confusing to learn.

Thanks - Red

Hmmm... are we looking at the same sites? Because BOTH sites you linked to have a 2 column layout. How comes you see it differently?
The only difference is: in the second one, after an initials two column layout at the top, there seems to be a small full-width part, after which the 2 column layout returns.

And to reply to your question: if you need to ask it, there is no easy way.

You're absolutely right I appreciate that.

What was really bothering me the most was how wide the sidebar was, as it was making my main content area too narrow. So I figured it might be easier to try changing the dimensions of everything instead.

So on my development site (which looks terrible I just use it for experimenting) I made the sidebar more narrow, and the content area wider.

That will definitely keep me satisfied for now. I'm going to resize everything on the new site now and play around with the content a bit. I think I can definitely make this work now.

    Thanks for the help!!

Well, all you did - in the example above - to make the sidebar narrower than the elements inside it (see: you cut off the right end of the included elements!) which will result in very unpleasant surprises in different browsers: your sidebar will go below the the content!

You can't do what you did: make the sidebar, for example, 200px wide and place a 300px wide gizmo into it... Absolutely wrong!

Not being familiar with the theme you are using I can't tell the exact steps you'd need to create a sidebar-less page. You may need to create a new template and edit 1 or 2 or 3 template files (depending how your theme has been coded) and to add some new definitions to your stylesheet.

There are many themes (e.g., Origami) that provide templates with varying numbers of columns. In the long run, a different theme would probably give you fewer headaches than trying to modify the one you are using now.
