Self Hosting Videos on Wordpress

Hi all,

What is the best way to self host a video(s) on your wordpress site? I would rather not embed them from Youtube, but I need a free / inexpensive way.

I tried dragging the video in the media folder, but the video would not upload due to size. Any idea's or help on this would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Jordan

    Hi there.

Try uploading your video(s) directly to your server through FTP.

    Good luck. ;-)

  • If you don't mind me asking, is there any reason you don't want to upload the videos to Youtube? That would be my suggestion.

If you embed a Youtube video at your Wordpress, you will get double traffic. 1. traffic toward to your blog (except Youtube). 2. traffic comes from Youtube. So consider Youtube.

If you are on shared hosting and a lot of people are viewing your videos (and why put them up if you would't want that to happen) then do expect to get some drama and grief about bandwidth usage.

If you have a dedicated server or a VPS you will be in a better position to do this.

Use Amazon AWS. It is free for the first year and then costs pennies after that.

It's a review site and they are product review videos. Others may have the same content, and it's hard to know if Youtube will allow this type of promotional video, especially multiples of the same video. Then again, I guess I could set up yet another youtube account in case it gets "banned". I'd hate to risk my adsense on my other 'good' Youtube channels.

I had a video site some years ago. What I remember is that it consumed a lot of bandwidth. It will cost you if you get a lot of visitors. I would continue with youtube if I were you.

You will need to do it via Ftp, then obviously would need a plugin to play the video.

Do be wary if you have limitations on bandwidth though as this will use a lot.

    I'd recommend Amazon AWS personally.

The speed of my videos is pretty good from them and I have
one client that I set up streaming for via Cloudfront and his
videos load quicker than You Tubes

He was using Vbulletin and I had to code a special addon
for him to make the expiring and secure links...that was a
    fun project

    Good luck

I totally agree with SteveWF on this on. Don't self-host videos, the bandwidth and CPU usage will shock you if you get a lot of traffic or viewing spikes.

I have a client who's site I maintain and they only have 4 small videos and average 18 GB a month in bandwidth just off 1000 visitors.....Yikes!
They won't move them off-site so it creates issues at times.

      AWS S3 is super cheap.

It is beneficial to upload videos to YouTube with your Landing Page URL in the description field.

FTP your video files and use a player plugin to gain more control and customize behaviour.

If bandwidth is an issue or if your hosting provider turns out to be too slow, consider AWS.

Another option is to go for a Vimeo or Wistia. Wistia is great for behaviour analytics.

I use Vimeo for our WordPress video tutorials on WP Series mostly for reliability, speed and customization. So far so good.

As a hosting provider - I would certainly recommend using a 3rd party storage such as AWS.

The problem you will run into is both bandwidth & CPU utilization. You could get away with http streaming, but then you run the risk of high bandwidth spikes. Http streaming would be with like real player, windows media player, quicktime etc.

I think the best option would be YouTube/Vimeo/AWS

You probably can't upload video within Wordpress because PHP's file upload size is probably set too low for that.

Instead, you need to upload the file to your server using FTP or SCP. Once it's uploaded, you aren't going to see your video in the Wordpress media manager. Add from server is a plugin that will allow you to browse for a file on your server and associate it with Wordpress' media manager thingy.

After that, you're going to have to install a plugin - a video player plugin to be precise. Embedding videos using one of the video player plugins varies depending on which one you install.

Once you've done those things and embedded your video, that's it.

    I hope that helps.
